Photos/Videos: Remembrance Day Parade
This morning’s [Nov.11] Remembrance Day Parade on Front Street honoured those who served during the two 20th century World Wars and other conflicts — especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Crowds lined the street to watch the parade, and pay honour to those who served. Wreaths were laid by Governor George Fergusson, Premier Paula Cox, Hamilton Hamilton Graham Outerbridge, and Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier.
Representatives from the 1st Battalion Caribbean Bermuda Contingent, the President of the War Veterans Association, Bermuda Militia Infantry, Chairman of the Defence Board, the Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Regiment, the Commissioner of Police and the Chief Fire Officer also laid wreaths.
Bermuda’s war vets march on:
Those on parade included the War Veterans, Bermuda Regiment, Bermuda Regiment Band & Corps of Drums, Bermuda Regiment Gun Troop, Bermuda Regiment Junior Leaders, Bermuda Cadet Corps, Bermuda Police, Bermuda Sea Cadets, Salvation Army Band, North Village Band & Somerset Brigade Band & Bermuda Islands Pipe Band and St. John Ambulance Brigade.
The Parade was command of Captain D.E.R. Simons, with Adjutant, Captain B.L. Beasley and RSM, WO1, G.S. Rayner. The War Vets were lead by 87-year-old WWII vet Jack Lightbourn.
A cannon shot marked the start of the two minutes’ silence at 11 a.m. — the time the armistice between the Allies and the Central Powers which ended World War One went into effect on November 11, 1918.
Parade highlights:
In the two World Wars about 600 Bermudian men volunteered and served overseas in Bermuda military contingents. All the soldiers who went overseas had to volunteer because under Bermuda law, no Bermudian soldier could be sent overseas into a combat zone without a special Act being passed by Bermuda’s House of Assembly.
There are no Bermudian veterans of the First World War [1914-1918] still alive, and only a handful of Bermuda’s veterans of World War Two [1939-1945] remain. The Second World War vets marched today alongside veterans of other conflicts including the Vietnam War [1955-1975], the Korean War [1950-1953] and those who marched in memory of veterans who have passed on.

Lest we forget.
These are very powerful pictures and make me very proud to be Bermudian. We should honor these people more often, it makes us come together with a sense of respect for those who came before us, black and white, women and men, young and old…these are Bermudians.
Its sad to Zane wearing his PLP pin to an event like this, all the other MPs seemed to get the memo that remembering war veterans doesn’t require partisanship.
Imagine those faces when they were young & fighting in their late teens or early 20s. Wonder what they think when they see Bermuda today. Was it worth the sacrifice?
