PLP Call On OBA To Release “Secret Plan”
[Updated] The PLP have released a statement calling on the OBA to release a “secret plan,” saying “it’s time for the OBA to come clean.”
PLP MP Darius Tucker said: “Last night on ZBM, Kim Swan acknowledged that a consultant was brought in after the last election… and recommended a “secret plan.”
According to Mr. Moreno, it was recommended that the UBP split up, with the younger members forming a new entity. It was then reported that the secret plan recommended that the old UBP members rejoin the new entity and form a new party. Sounds familiar?
“When asked whether this plan exists last night, Kim Swan answered simply “yes.” The public needs to know exactly what is in this plan and what the OBA is hiding.
“For weeks, we’ve been asking what the OBA is really all about? The answers may be in this secret plan. It’s time for the OBA to come clean. Who do they really stand for and what are they really about?
“Is it really about the country or them getting power? Bermudians deserve to know the truth. That’s why today, we are calling on the OBA to release that secret plan,” concluded Mr Tucker.
Update 7.10pm: OBA Chairman Thad Hollis said: “The One Bermuda Alliance was founded on the need to bring change to Bermuda, to provide Bermuda with a Government that puts the people first. We were not founded on the basis of a ‘secret’ document.
“This matter was raised by the Government when the OBA was first formed and they return to it today in a thinly veiled effort to distract attention from their record, which has left thousands unemployed, thousands more underemployed, neighbourhoods that are unsafe, businesses closing down every week and a billion dollar level of debt that will burden generations to come.
“This is the reality that concerns Bermudians today. The Government should be ashamed that they have expressed more passion on this matter than finding solutions to the real problems facing Bermudian families every day.
“The Government has asked who is the OBA? That’s easy. We are a party that brought together Bermudians from all walks of life to make Bermuda better for all, leaving no one behind. Our focus remains on addressing the challenges facing Bermuda today.
“We will not be addressing this matter again. Instead we will continue listening to and working hard for the people of Bermuda and putting forward concrete solutions that work for them.
“Bermuda needs real change, not another five years of the politics of division and distraction,” concluded Mr Hollis.

Truth about what? That the UBP had a poor image with the aspects general public and decided to rebrand? And… so what? How is this newsworthy? How does this affect who would be better to lead this country? What about the REAL issues facing Bermuda?
We should only be talking about jobs/economy, violent crime, education, and the debt levels. Call them the OBA/UBP all you want. So many people don’t care. With the severity of the issues that we are all facing right now being what it is, how anyone can vote for a party simply because of the colour of their skin is beyond me. No shareholder would appoint a CEO just because they are black, white, green or purple. Why should we do that for our political leaders.
I vote on merit as established by the plans and vision that is put forth for the island, the credentials of the leaders, and track record. For me it is because of track record alone that I cannot vote PLP. How can anyone vote for a leader would had that nerve to shirk any culpability for the fiscal mismanagement of this country by claiming that they are simply a cog in a much larger machine is beyond me.
Here’s a gameplan (free of charge) for the PLP to win votes from people who look beyond skin colour (note – i only indicate that I am black in my screen name to provide context to my comments):
1- start by saying “we have made mistakes that were made worse by the recession” and not blaming a global recession for all that ails this country. Good and bad decision making can happen during good and bad times.
2- then say “International business – we’re sorry we let Burch with his rhetoric and Cox with her surprise tax hike do the damage that they did to our relationship with you. We now understand the role you play on this island and want to work to help you succeed here”
3- then say “We will investigate allegations of coruption and rid this government of anyone who has used a position of power to gain personally or to allow friends/family to gain. We will pursue criminal charges where applicable and we will put in controls, subject to independent review, to ensure these things don’t happen again.”
4- Then say “We will have the courage to make decision that may be unpopular but will serve the long term interests of Bermuda and her people.”
5- Follow through
What a sensible 5 point plan. They’ll ignore it though and instead focus on the “secret plan” and this imaginary 500m in increased spending that they have magically produced absent any analysis whatsoever.
I so hope they lose.

The why I see it is that in the future Kim Swan will join the PLP and I would not be surprised at all if this was really not some scheme dreamt up by the plp in the first place. I heard a plp supporter on the radio yesterday talking about the OBA having links to the republicans and a guy on Bernews proved that the PLP have links/ dealings with the republicans, so what do we have two republican type parties here? Or was it a case of who paid more to know the others plans since they seem to come from the same camp (the US politicians must be LOLing all day about this crap wonder if we are an experiment for them later on. I note Kim did not release details of the plan and it amazes me that everyone knew about it in the first place. I think independence should add one thing to their platform. Ready “televise party meetings” if they are all about Bermuda and have nothing to hide this should not be a problem and it would definitively show who is coming up with what initiatives right off the bat. Also if they really are about the people they might get more support/membership. What amazes me is there is always something to distract people away from the track record of this government since they have been in power it’s been one big distraction and guess what. This sounds so silly. The plan was more than likely to disband and create a new Party which is what they have done. It might have been a bit messy and that was to be expected but they have achieved it. To infer something sinister is just silly. The idea that the OBA have secret plans that are against what the average Bermudian wants is ridiculous. The OBA want everyone in Bermuda to succeed. To want anything else would be political suicide. Darius and the PLP, just try sticking to the issues, that is what people are concerned with – like who is actually going to be able to grow the Economy and be able to create policies that encourage major job creation.

What was wrong with the UBP. The UBP was seen as the “white, rich elites of the island. The “forty thieves”, although none of them were ever prosecuted as far as I know was the title is given due to the way they as independence won a government and then formed a party thus showing they were not acting as independence at all but as a group. Coupled with the racial past of Bermuda and the issue of the forced sale of land at Tucker’s Point “for Tourism” I’m sure you can see the bad taste this would leave in anyone’s mouth. Some forward thinking people in the PLP were thinking about human rights translating to workers rights at the time pushed against these business owners to give rights to the worker such as vacation, maternity, sick days and the like, but lets not get it twisted this did not happen in the vacuum of Bermuda this was a global movement see history of India. So after all this the UBP stuck with the racial legacy of the past in today’s “” normal, read as today’s social value system just could not be demonstrated to the people that were hurt by the past injustices this “party” had pushed. Unfortunately all some see are the sins of the fathers that those who controlled for lack of a better term, maybe the influential is better, in the UBP. Which is most likely why the ubp has had so many black leaders. This too some was window-dressing (slave/ master connotation) or could have been some white people trying to show that they have changed and that they would accept a black leader I do not know. At the end of the day they the UBP would lose consecutive elections due to blacks that may not even be voting for the PLP but defiantly against the UBP. That’s my take on it……………

See Marc Bean’s speech at the recent PLP Warwick meeting which could have been taken as uplifting except I still think he’s one step away from talking to all of Bermuda. I saw his remarks as “lets start our (black people) our private sector as basically black people just support black business (I’m sure you can see it this way based on again Bermuda’s history and racial legacy). Also note I do think he is the PLPs most progressive candidate. Ok I’ll stop here way too much politics for now………………………….

Search online I believe it was in one or more of the auditors reports and it is not a secret figure. Find the actual figure and re-post with source and I will apologize if there is no missing or “unaccounted for money”. I trust that you will apologize if you find there is? There are many angry black men in Bermuda and many more frustrated and equally angry white men . Some share the same reasons to be angry ,no shame there whether one is black or white . I,m a retired fisherman who couldn’t make a decent living for my family after Anne Cartwright Decouto (anybody remember her) introduced the fish pot ban .
The white hand of the UBP laid an egg , the egg turned into a cute caterpillar (the BDA), the caterpillar went into and now develops itself while in a cocoon . I agree, the UBP should have stayed. The PLP painted them as a evil party, but how was Bermuda under their watch? You know as well as everyone else, we were the envy of the world!! Now we have turned out to be the laughing stock of the world. The PLP have diven away many people who have money to spend, and the only family’s to my surprise that is still standing strong are the Swan’s and Gibbon’s families. I am surprised that they still are taking the abuse and still fighting for this sinking ship. When Dr Brown, Mr. Burch and a few others made people feel uncomfortable, they said I truly don’t need this and packed up and left. Many rich people, black and white have very little left in Bermuda. Does Dr Brown, his brother Phil Butterfield, The Trimmingham’s, The Frith’s, The Smith’s, all the old CEO’s of the exampt companies, even the present CEO’s don’t even live in Bermuda any more. All you PLP supports, please ask yourselves why??? Why is the economy as bad as it is? Is it solely on the recession, and if so why are all the other countries GDP growing and ours continue to post negitive results. Lets be honest, the people that we hated on, are the ones that provide jobs and majority of them have left and what is left don’t have any confidence in Bermuda anymore. We were doing well until six years ago, and Dr Brown clearly stated that he was going to make people unconfortable, but guess what they are still doing fine, we the people are now suffering and made unconfortable and jobless. Please lets be honest, put your hatred aside and make the right decision as every day passes we are falling further behind. If you ever have a moment please view the documentory called “Life and Debt.” That is the direction we are heading in if we allow the PLP to continue to make people feel uncomfortable.

It will employ hundeds of people and become the third leg of the economy, making up for all those jobs lost in IB, retail and tourism over the past 5 years. Maybe the people that come and watch all the launches can stay in the new hotels that are being built before the end of this year.

I hope the secret plan is to investigate all transaction that have taken place in the last 6 years. That is when things started to go wrong. Trace all funds from where is started to where it ended up. Contractors getting paid and then where it went etc…The various boards and what they have agreed to. Do exactly what was done to Dr. Browns friend in Turks and Caicus, investigate, investigate investigate and if there is something found prosecute and pay back the money to the taxpayer to help with this outragious debt. This should be the SECRET PLAN!!! Now lets put it in action please….

This is a challenge that is facing Bermuda today, Kim Swan the leader of the UBP/OBA said that there was a secret plan, and you tried to fool Bermuda by disbanding and forming a new party to act as if it’s a new party when in fact it is the same Old Bermudian Associates (OBA/UBP) .
And Bermuda is fed up with the UBP and that old secret boys club way of doing business, at least the PLP opened the doorway for more Bermudians to do business and become business owners, and sour wealthy people pulled their money out of Bermudas circulation to help hurt our economy but we did excellent with out them,
And to all you Morons talking about debt remember George Bush had a war 2 years after the PLP was in government and he had two terms which ended in 2008, so for 10 years Bush sent the world into a recession and Bermuda was affected by that so out of the 14 years PLP has been in power the r GDP decline peak to trough was higher than any recession the UBP ever faced in their 30 something years,
and The PLP invested in its people and in infrastructure ,we accumulated debt but it if you understand basic economics… which most of you don’t ….then you would understand how debt creates money, the OBA/UBP tell you they have a 500million plan in government spending and you think that that is coming out of their a$$??? You think they are going to invest their own businesses and money in that??? Or do you think that would put us further in debt.
Most of us are in debt, we are broke ..we don’t have more than $3000 in our bank accounts..
We get in debt because we need to purchase certain things in order to live and make it…
We work mon to fri and we have no money by mon
In order to get money we invest in ourselves and we get a job some get two jobs or three
Those jobs help us to pay off our debt…(loan..house..bills ect ect)
Once our bills is paid off we are then out of debt and we gain profits (if we keep our jobs)
The PLP had to invest in its people in order for Bermuda to survive this recession
More jobs was saved by this investing during this recession
The PLP took money to make money and we have to go further into debt in order to gain profits and survive…..still not understanding???
If you buy a house you have brought into debt…once you own the house and rent it out you have something that you would have invested in that is now bringing you a profit.
And 14 years of battling a recession and investing is too short of a time to see a fast growth, and I don’t know of any body that has gotten a house and paid it off in 14 years, they usually finish by 30 years and some peoples children or grandkids end up finishing off the debt, and are able to see the profits of their grandparents from the investment they made years ago.
So our future children will inherit debt but it wont be a debt that will cripple them and truth be told there is no nations except a few that have no nation debt!

For something to be an investment it eventually has to bring some sort of return with it. What infrastructure has the plp invested in that will bring some sort of financial return? The only infrastructure I remember them talking about was the buses, ferries, the dockyard pier ect. all of which started falling apart shorlty after they laid claim to it. These foreign investors you mentioned made an investment in our country with the sole purpose of gaining a profit from it. How do we pay back this money in 10 years with steadily decreasing revenue streams? What happens if we can’t pay them back?

I was tempted not to comment on this article but could not resist.
I am surprised the MP Tucker led the charge, given his recent switch to PLP. The reality, however, is that the OBA are campaigning on change and the so called secret document is relevant. The relevance is that if the party was founded on an attempt to fool the electorate into thinking they are not the original UBP but the facts show otherwise, then they can not be legitmate contenders for an opposition or governing party.
Many of the posters are ignoring the simple fact. Does the document exist and if so, admit it and move on. Another interesting aspect is whether some of the new OBA signees are unaware of the basis of their party and are in fact pawns in a bigger game then they understand.
One explanation that I am waiting for is how did MPs Crockwell, Hunt and Pettingill get put out to political pasture. They are the only ones that had the fortitude to step away from the UBP when it was not popular to do so but none of them got the ‘safe seats’.
My final comment is that it would be quite revealing to me and others if such a plan could be concocted (and implemented) at a national level and for the entire party to execute.
A political risk for OBA at this point is for the document to be released by someone else closer to the election – better to deal with this elephant as soon as possible!!

And why would it take so long for this document to be revealed, especially if there are former UBP members within the PLP. Surely they would be aware of it. This is nothing more than a red herring attempt at deception. It is very desperate from the PLP. Again, if the OBA which consists of Bermudian’s who all have a vested interest in their Islands future, were to have such a document what does it reveal and evil plot to hurt the people of Bermuda??? On the other hand our debt grows by $200m a year and there is no plan or evidence that the Government has what it takes to turn it around.
