Premier: ‘Send Them A Message On Monday’

December 13, 2012

[Updated w/OBA response] Premier Paula Cox called on the electorate to not “be fooled” and send a message that “we find it offensive when their consultant uses terms like black surrogates.”

Premier Cox was speaking at a PLP press conference today [Dec 13], where PLP candidates including Marc Bean, Dale Butler, Kim Wilson, Zane DeSilva, Diallo Rabain, Patrice Minors, Dawn Simmons, Walter Roban, Walton Brown, Stephen Todd and Rolfe Commissiong were also present.

Premier Cox said: “The PLP candidates require you to come out to vote on Monday December 17th and to choose the PLP. Then, with your support, we will continue to stand strong for Bermudians. Our mission is to continue creating an enabling environment for jobs.

“We will launch Job Corps Bermuda which will create jobs for our young people and provide them with training. We will open the One Stop Career Centre to make it easier for Bermudians to access jobs and we will roll out the red carpet, connecting returning college graduates with internship and mentoring opportunities.”

The Premier continued: “On Monday, don’t turn the clock back. Don’t be fooled by their glitz, their attacks and their secret plan. Send them a message that we find it offensive when their consultant – uses terms like “black surrogates.”

“On Monday, ask yourself if you really trust an OBA that has promised an unelected Cuts & Pain Commission that will have to make deep and radical cuts to public education, jobs, benefits and much more if they hope to keep their promises.

“My fellow Bermudians, this is the most important election since that historic day in November 1998. We must not turn back to the old UBP guard. I ask you to give us our confidence so that we can continue to make sure and steady progress that works for all our people.”

Premier Paula Cox’s full statement follows below:

Good afternoon.

When you go to the polls on Monday, ask yourself which party has stood strong for Bermudians like you? We’ve gone through hard times. We’ve gone through the worst global economic crisis since the Great Depression, but in times like these, we need leaders that have a heart for the people and who truly care about Bermudians like you.

The PLP may not be perfect – no one is. We are all human. But, what we have done is stand strong for our people and deliver real results that even our opponents are now praising.

FutureCare has provided affordable medication and doctor’s visits for our seniors after a lifetime of hard work. We are the party that delivered FutureCare because we care about ALL our seniors – not just a select few. When you go to the polls, ask yourself, who do you trust to protect your FutureCare – a PLP that created it? Or, an OBA that attacked it for years before flip flopping in a callous attempt to win votes?

The PLP has delivered the landmark DayCare initiative providing hundreds of working Bermudian families with child care assistance. This assistance helps our parents further their education, gain work experience and expand their skills. This is what standing strong for Bermudians during the midst of a global economic crisis is all about.

We are the party that protected jobs during the global economic downturn and we’re the party that created the Economic Empowerment Zones to help in creating jobs and Bermudian owned small businesses in the areas that need the investment most. That’s what creating opportunities and standing strong for Bermudians is all about.

The PLP candidates require you to come out to vote on Monday December 17th and to choose the PLP. Then, with your support, we will continue to stand strong for Bermudians. Our mission is to continue creating an enabling environment for jobs. We will launch Job Corps Bermuda which will create jobs for our young people and provide them with training. We will open the One Stop Career Centre to make it easier for Bermudians to access jobs and we will roll out the red carpet, connecting returning college graduates with internship and mentoring opportunities.

We will expand the Incentives for Job Makers programme which ties immigration benefits to the creation and preservation of Bermudian jobs. And, we will continue to attract new international business. We will work with our local financial institutions and the Bermuda Stock Exchange to issue a bond and we will work to continue to advance our tourism product as laid out in the National Tourism Plan.

We will work to reduce the cost of living by expanding geared to income housing and work to develop a natural gas power plant that will lower your cost of electricity.

My fellow Bermudians, we have stood strong for you during tough times all around the world. We’ve done all of this because we care. We are deeply rooted in the community. We understand your values, your struggles and your needs. We are the party of the people and we put our confidence in you, the people of Bermuda.

On Monday, don’t turn the clock back. Don’t be fooled by their glitz, their attacks and their secret plan. Send them a message that we find it offensive when their consultant – uses terms like “black surrogates.”

On Monday, ask yourself if you really trust an OBA that has promised an unelected Cuts & Pain Commission that will have to make deep and radical cuts to public education, jobs, benefits and much more if they hope to keep their promises.

My fellow Bermudians, this is the most important election since that historic day in November 1998. We must not turn back to the old UBP guard. I ask you to give us our confidence so that we can continue to make sure and steady progress that works for all our people.

Thank you.

Minister Walter Roban also held a press conference yesterday, during which he said: “The other day I was out canvassing and I met a young man who told me that he just got a new job. I congratulated him and asked him how he was able to succeed in today’s economic environment.

“He told me that he had gotten a government scholarship to study abroad. Upon his return, he worked at it and got a job that he loves. While I know that many Bermudians are hurting, there are also many success stories

“In times like these, Bermudians have an important choice to make between a PLP that stands strong for our people and an OBA who are using political tactics that called for the use of “black surrogates” and has another secret plan to start a Cuts & Pain Commission that may well put college scholarships on the chopping block.”

“The OBA continues to try to sell us a fairy tale,” Minister Roban continued. “They say that they can dramatically increase spending and cut taxes while simultaneously reducing the debt, but how?

“They can’t introduce all that new spending, 500 million and counting and reduce the debt without engaging in rapid and radical cuts to programmes that matter to you.”

“We will ask for the benefit of our people our democracy. It’s time for the OBA to come clean. What will their Cuts & Pain commission cut? Bermudians deserve to know.”

Minister Roban’s full statement follows below:

Good afternoon,

The other day I was out canvassing and I met a young man who told me that he just got a new job. I congratulated him and asked him how he was able to succeed in today’s economic environment. He told me that he had gotten a government scholarship to study abroad. Upon his return, he worked at it and got a job that he loves.

While I know that many Bermudians are hurting, there are also many success stories. In times like these, Bermudians have an important choice to make between a PLP that stands strong for our people and an OBA who are using political tactics that called for the use of “black surrogates” and has another secret plan to start a Cuts & Pain Commission that may well put college scholarships on the chopping block.

As the global economic crisis raged, the PLP stood strong for Bermudians by training hundreds. We started the DryWall programme, the Waiter/Server programme, the Landscaping programme, the Accounting programme, the CISCO Academy for IT training, the Nail Tech programme and much more.

These programmes have upgraded the skills of hundreds of Bermudians and placed them in jobs. We have more work to do and we have a vision to create more jobs and opportunities for Bermudians. In the next term, we will start Job Corps Bermuda which will be targeted at Bermudians aged 18-24.

It will provide training, job placement, career counseling and mentoring to our young people. We will open the One Stop Career Centre – a place where Bermudians can go to access resources and get placed in a job. We will roll out the red carpet for our college graduates and provide returning graduates with mentorships and internships. Broadening the internship opportunities government is already providing from within.

We will start the New Business Initiative to connect young entrepreneurs with business financing and advice. And, we will expand the EEZ, its grants for small businesses and tax concessions to more areas that need the investment the most.

On the international business side, we have outlined a number of ideas to create more economic opportunity and bring jobs to Bermuda. We will expand the innovative Incentives for Job Makers Act that attaches immigration benefits to creating jobs for Bermudians.

We will introduce a new bond market to Bermuda to bring more opportunities in our international business sector. And, we will further establish regulations for Islamic Finance to bring new investors to the island.

These are just a few of our ideas to create jobs and opportunities for Bermudians. While we have been up front and open with Bermudians about our plans, the OBA has announced a troubling Cuts & Pain Commission. What will be on this ‘unelected’ Commission’s chopping block? Civil service Jobs? Public education? Benefits for those in need? Assistance to families? FutureCare? DayCare? The OBA hasn’t told us.

The OBA continues to try to sell us a fairy tale. They say that they can dramatically increase spending and cut taxes while simultaneously reducing the debt, but how? They can’t introduce all that new spending, 500 million and counting and reduce the debt without engaging in rapid and radical cuts to programmes that matter to you. We will ask for the benefit of our people our democracy. It’s time for the OBA to come clean. What will their Cuts & Pain commission cut? Bermudians deserve to know.

-

Update 7.19pm: In response, an OBA spokesperson said: “Bermudians can be disappointed at a time Government debt stands at $1.4 billion, with more than 10,000 Bermudians unemployed or under-employed, with 36% of young Bermudians unable to find a job and with gang violence ripping at the heart of communities, that the Government is pushing fear rather than a vision of hope and change to the community.

“They have spent most of this election trying to tear down the OBA instead of speaking to the people about solving the problems they face. The OBA has spoken about building a Bermuda based on social and economic equity, leaving no one behind, with plans to create 2000 jobs, make our neighbourhoods safe, reduce government debt and build great schools for our kids.

“Bermuda is at a crossroads and the choice for voters on Monday is clear: whether they want more of the same with the current Government or change for the better with the OBA. On December 17, we can change the direction this country is headed. It’s time for change.”

Send ‘them’ a message? Don’t worry Madam Premier, I certainly will. So will other swing voters who got the UBP out and made way for a better option in 1998. And its now time for another change in Government. The PLP without Lois, Freddie, Cox Snr., Dr. Barbara, Austin, and Brangman are no longer the PLP.

      • rockfish says:

who is “Them” anyways. Why isnt it “The” people of Bermuda. We need a government that speaks to everyone not just a portion of the country. Ms Cox words only aim to divide.

        • Blurt says:

….the PLP, it’s dillusional leader requires people to vote PLP…are all about the ministers and getting connected friends contracts. they don’t give a damn about anyone else. They don’t give a damn about you

          • Watching says:

AND some of these contracts/friends are for expats…I have written proof..standing strong for Bermudians my ass! Isn’t that right Zane?

  3. Pitts Bay says:

They request and REQUIRE you to vote and to vote PLP

    They did future care.

They did free (or not so free) day care.

That is all they can say…..

The rest is all promises…. (empty promises at that.)

    Smacks of desparation

    • Balanced Facts says:

And they had to cut spending to those things that were “done” because they have to pay interest payments on the borrowed money to build stuff, like Grand Atlantic, that sits empty, and has no return on investment…and you “require” us to vote for you? Really?

  4. me says:

    OBA has my vote too!

  5. Useless says:

If the PLP were to lose any election, one of the first strategic ploys to gain more votes would be the use of ‘white surrogates’. Each Party is subject to play politricks for power.

  6. More Confused says:

Send the PLP a message that we won’t be called House N******s, Uncle Toms and all the rest. Send a message that we will not sit back and take all the racist rhetoric that the PLP throw out. Send a message that Bermuda is not going to accept an elite Black Power group in Government – this is 2012 not 1962 Send a message that we want to go forward as a united Island not constantly be divided by hatred.

    • frank says:

my people are only being real

      • over soon.. says:

When a party uses the black power salute at their rallies, and then wonders why whites aren’t interested in them, they are not being real, they are being deliberately divisive.

        • Like It Is says:

you must be white and cannot understand!

when ya born white ya always right, innit!

white people are the reason why there is so much division.

          • Please Leave Politics says:

I’m not white and when I read your ignorant comment… all I could do was shake my head… sad times on this rock

          • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

WTF – are you for real. Have you ever been to a PLP rally or listened to one??!!!. Pick one, any one in the last 30 years and replay it!!! Have you ever been to a BIU rally or meeting?! Have you ever read the Workers Voice? Ever listened to Ms. Furbert rant! I have and I was not so bothered by what they said because there are haters everywhere in all skin colors. However, when hateful and ignorant statements are made that are divisive and WRONG I don’t want to be a part of that group regardless if te conversation revolves around race, religion, sexuality or politics. That is divisive. When you push someone away when you don’t need them…don’t be surprised if they don’t show up again.

White Bermudians are often shown by a few ignorant individuals (you included) that we are not welcome in your house. I ask you to look at the companies that are owned and run by black PLP candidates and see how many white people are employed at those companies. Are we never, ever, qualified – or just not welcome!? Look at companies that are unionized and how many shop stewards are white. Check out the BIU, SAL, Liberty Theatre, Hott, Bda Healthcare Serv – you name the PLP company and look at te make up of that company. The truth is there in Black and White!

If you are going to make such an idiotic statement at least explain yourself in detail instead of just playing the name calling game. PFO – some of us see clearly now.

          • say it like it is. says:

You are a fool Like it is, white people are the reason that there is division. I donlt think so. Ewart Brown ring any bells for you? Lavitta Foggo ring any bells for you? Derick Burgess ring any bells for you? These people are some of the reasons why Bermuda is divided. They have told us in no uncertain terms, they do not want or like whites. They do not need us. Well, I bet they love us today, because they need our vote, but guess what will probably never get it.

    • Out of flight says:

Got some nerve. Lock stuck and barrel you all joined the OBa without a single meeting in public questioning the PLP. Kim Swan’s wife told it like it was and now we all know YOU substituted the N word with surrogate. Black people have now seen it in writing and you have much to apologize for. But let’s face it you will lose because you don’t have a bit of love and understanding in your heart. just full of hate.

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

Same could be said of the PLP consultant report that was written not for the PLP but about the PLP by non other than the PLP’s past elections strategist remember that one looking at the PLP’s at least last two elections you can plainly see that they uses his suggestions to the letter and created well you in short people who will forever yes I said FOREVER hate other Bermudians cause of skin color. Oh and before you start with I have some white friend crap just to let you know even Lavern Furbert has been on record saying that does not absolve you from being racist. You breed it, teach it and it runs out your pours like alcohol and while yes I do agree that the past has had issues but if you can’t see that the issues are just being kicked down the road by every one but most importantly by those who say it should be dealt with to heal aren’t doing it and are in fact making it worse your blind. To all the 35-18 year olds and younger look at one next to you and know with out a doubt the PLP would have you hate each other so they could stay in POWER it’s just a game to the plp higherarchy. They have their flags and hats and jerseys like they are at a football game. they use brain washing tactics though repeating want they want you to think like over and over again. I can’t see trusting the PLP unless major changes occur within them. To me they are to use a once said phase “morally bankrupt”. Do the youth of the island really want to grow up know they will eventually expected by these political groups to at the least dislike each other or at worst hate each other. Please send them a message for my kids you kids our future kids we don’t want to be separated anymore we want to move together and as stated like a family we may not always agree but at least all ideas will merit equal consideration no matter who they come from. At present we throw ideas away based on who said them and what party they are from before even looking at them. …….

LOL last comment no political party should rule for 15, 20 or 30 year blocks complacency moves in and no new ideas to boost the country is the result.

  7. Serious Though says:

Finally PLP get’s it, Bermudians are not going FORWARD to the abyss of debt, crime and joblessness.. they have a choice, and on Monday they will send you one a clear message, Thank you but NO thank you… we have a choice >> OBA ! and That’s change we can ALL Believe in!!

  8. skeptical says:

Send them a message that we find it offensive when their consultant – uses terms like “black surrogates.”

Premier Cox, I am embarassed by you. You are a leader of our country and are supposed to be showing us the way to go. “A leader knows the way, shows the way and goes the way” John C Maxwell.

On another note, many people in your constituency have never seen you on their doorstep, never met you, never spoken to you, never received an e-mail from you. This shows that you do not care about the people you are supposed to be representing. We have been waiting to hear from the PLP and have received loads of information from the OBA candidate. He is showing a great interest in what is happening in our area and has done so for a long time, not just before the election.
    Shame on you.

    • Fed Up says:

don’t worry, my PLp representative only showed up to make sure I was registered, and that’s the first time I have ever seen him since the PLP has been the government, and HE never asked about any of my concerns, so I guess HE really doesn’t care, well OBA you have my vote, they took the time to actually talk to me about those things

      • mixitup says:

Like you really entertained voting PLP anyway? you people kill me!

        • Sandgrownan says:

          You people?

          Racist.

          • Triangle Drifter says:

            LOL

          • eewoo says:

Fed Up did infer ‘my PLP representative’ so this would infer that ‘you people’ means PLP voters. Which isn’t racist…is it?

            • over soon.. says:

lol this is 2012 bermuda… “you people” ALWAYS is racist.. even if its the old saltus talking about BHS…

              just the way it is

            • 1minute says:

              From how I see it…
Fed Up is probably white, talking about the PLP candidate in their area.
Mixitup is probably black, and used the “you people”
              Sandgrownan is calling mixitup racist…

At this point, the OBA candidate came to my door and I have not seen either the PLP or Independent candidates for my area.

        • Rick Rock says:

Well the chicken sh1t PLP candidate in my area never showed up. Maybe I’m not a ‘real Bermudian’.

      • Like It Is says:

talked to you to give you false promises, go ahead vote for them, you will see.

either way the island will not respect an OBA government, and me just typin that is the close you lot will come to have the title.

        silly bunch of naive peeople.

money is what makes you, you cant do anthing else unless you see money, bunch of degenerates.

        go back under your rock.

        • Please Leave Politics says:

Help me understand… what do you want? Why so much hate? Because some people were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. So what! Here is what we as the black community need to do:
          Pay attention in school
          Get good grades
          Hold our children accountable
          Raise our children
Turn in known criminals in our families
Save money, even if it’s a little
          Stop breeding like rabbits
Stop blaming others for our shortcomings
          Start businesses
          Help each other
          Employ each other
          Provide scholarships
Support each other’s businesses instead robbing them or loitering outside of them
          Have good work ethic
          Stop complaining
          Stop sitting on walls
          Pull up our dang pants
Stop buying $500 cell phones for children
          Stop blaming slavery
          Stop blaming white people
          Stop blaming rich people

Maybe if we held ourselves accountable and strived to make changes… just maybe we blacks wouldn’t be so down trodden… no government, OBA or PLP can change those things listed… only black people can make the changes needed to better our lives

          • Pastor Syl says:

@ Please leave politics: Just had to piggy back on the blaming others stuff.
In recovery, you learn that, once you are an adult, as long as you blame others for your situation, you are giving away your power. In fact, you give what or who ever it is you blame power over your life. You cannot change anything if it is someone else’s fault, if someone else is to blame for your condition.
It is not until you decide that you and you alone are responsible for remaining where you are, and also for the rest of your life, – YOU, not anybody else,- that is when you can take back your power and create the life you want.

        • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

And the island respects a PLP government…hahahahah!!!
What part do you want me to respect.

I think that you need to come up out from under your rock and see the light. If I am wrong – please correct me.

        • LOL (original TM*) says:

“either way the island will not respect an OBA government” and there it is the battered wife syndrome, or the being robbed by someone like me or whatever you want to call it. So if the PLP lose you will in fact be like the republicans and with hold money in the economy is that not the same idea some radio plp callers said they felt the OBA supporters are doing talk about cutting you own nose off. So will you stop following the law cause you perceive a white guy is in charge……will you stop respecting the offices of ministers and the premier the way the PLP respects the Governor? will you not roll up your sleeves and work for your country that the PLP states they love so much? Well that really says it all doesn’t it. Respect your country and all it’s people…..

OBA gets my support !!!!!! so Paula i wouldn’t be aiding and abeitting you

  12. Family Man says:

    Tired of the corruption.

  13. GOD 1st says:

These people sound like terrorist let’s send them a message

    • Like It Is says:

      and thats comin from GOD.

take a back seat and lay down.

      you sound G%Y

      • so what says:

I dont just sound GAY I am. I will also be voting for OBA.

I’m guessing you want me to leave the country, correct? Even if I was voting for the PLP

  14. Bullseye says:

“The PLP candidates require you to come out to vote on Monday December 17th and to choose the PLP.”

What about the needs of the people? Oh yeah – you’ll get to that once you are elected again.

  15. Really? says:

Is that the best the PLP can do?

Send them a message because of an old report created by a consultant? What about consultant Commissiong and his anti-white talk? Unlike the US consultant, he IS a member of the PLP and employed by the Gov.

I will take my chance with OBA becuase of HOPE and becuase the current Gov has taken us granted for too long.

Wishing the independant candidates and the OBA all the best.

  16. Knobby says:

Clutching at straws, back to the race card again. PLP must be worryied because they’ll be checking the jobs section of the newspaper on Tuesday and there won’t be any…reap what you sow!

  17. SNS says:

Let me send YOU a message Premier Paula Cox…I hope and pray your time ruining Bermuda is over!! I will vote OBA on Monday!

  18. GOD 1st says:

PLP Forcing grown men to warwick camp. (conscription)

    • Like It Is says:

18 is a graown man in Bermuda, yeah right, thats the problem, soon as you go 18 you think your an adult, but your NOT.

the average 18 year old acts like a F%$kin 8 year old.

and you know this, so come again.

if these lil retards where up the camp they might learn something.

      • FirstTimeVoter says:

How can you actually say that? I’d agree that not every 18 year old should be considered a grown man, but to say it’s the average is a bit of an exaggeration…

Most of the 18 year olds that i know, are intelligent, people, that have goals and aspirations for their lives. Because a select few have been acting a fool and like hooligans because of either: bad parenting, lack of mentorship, just nothing better do do with themselves, or w/e other reasons, that does give anyone the right to call them a retard.

Yes, it is sad to see that people younger than myself (21) are sitting in jail for absolutely ludicrous actions and just acting as if the world owes them something. But really, sitting here calling them names doesn’t make the situation any better for anyone. if u are tired of what they’re doing, then get off your high horse and do something about it.

Also, “Retard” is offensive. fix your vernacular.

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

That what these older guys in the PLP think of the younger voters sad sad. Next he’ll be saying they need to be taught by older PLPers about how things are in Bermuda……

        LOL

  19. Kim Smith says:

Bermuda cannot afford another term of the PLP.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Bermuda could barely afford the first term what with the welcome flowers at the & all. It only got worse after that.

      • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

I admit I voted for them that first election and knew we were in trouble when they announced a public and paid holiday because they won. Thought that was a strange move for a group that was ready to go to work for Bermuda.

    • Like It Is says:

Bermuda cannot afford another one of your misleading comments Kim.

      go s$%k something.

  20. Minister Moonwalker says:

vote OBA for HOPE AND CHANGE enough bullcrap

  21. Rational thinker says:

This is indeed the most important election since 1998. In 1998 the, then, current Government (UBP) needed to be voted out, and they were. Now in 2012, just as in 1998, the current Government needs to be voted out. Voting PLP in now will get us more of the same, just as voting UBP in 1998 would have gotten us more of the same.

  22. Vulpes says:

After fourteen years Madame Premier, is this paranoid hysteria the best you are able to offer? Your role as a key cog in Ewart Brown’s Plantation, minority race baiting politics and your continuance of this sort of disgusting sectarianism is an outrage and both you and he should be on trial. Long may you and he rot in Hell for the evil you have brought on this country.

  23. Zombie Apocalypse says:

When will she get the message that it was not “their consultant”? She delights in spreading pure unadulterated lies. Is that what she wants, for us to know that she is a liar? Or is she too stupid to realise that she’s wrong?

    • Terry says:

Ewart Brown still pulling the cog wheels.

    • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

It always insults me when someone as smart as Paula Cox continuously and intentionaly spreads and repeats misleading information with the assumtion that the audience is stupid and will fall for it – if it is repeated enough. The general public is smarter than you think!

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

Yep brainwashing tactics is what is boils down to all you need is a small commonality and bang Hitler with the Jews not saying that the PLP is like Hitler but the tactic is the same as having the Jews were a star of David always and then the general public starts wondering what and why the group of Stars are only hanging with each other and how dare they not mingle with everyone else and how come they buyn from they stores and guess he or she just hired a friend see they were the same “Star” and and ………………….

        you get the picture….

        LOL

  24. CBA says:

There’s that race card that keeps pushing away all us young voters. Have you not noticed the low turnout of young voters at plp events? Your record over the past decade speaks for itself and it isn’t good

    • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

As Bermudas races integrate and more of us have a mixed race children more and more will be disgusted by the divisive comments made by those within the PLP.

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

And or the OBA if infact thing such as this exist. I have mixed kids and I have no tome for based people we are BERMUDIANS on and all.

        LOL

  25. Cross+Roads says:

Don`t be “FOOLED” !! Don`t you be fooled Paula Cox, cross your t`s and dot your i`s and get your sh one t together because you and your yes ministers are outta der !!! OBA ALL D FATTEN WAY !!!!!

  26. CBA says:

You lot need to stop milking this secret document. It’s an odd document and the term wasn’t meant to be offensive. If it was then why didn’t any of your black members have a problem with it at the time? You really think they would have addressed it to Kim swan if it was meant to be offensive? You plp really treat the voters like idiots. Hopefully you realise that we aren’t dumb on election day

  27. Joe says:

I think the message is clear.
The PLP have finally taken a reality check and see the writing is on the wall and desperate times are calling for desperate measures.

Surely they must have someone better, switched on and credible than Mr Roban to put over the message…
when he started the press conference with …”the other day I was out canvassing and met a young man,” I shuddered to think how the story was going to end…..

  28. smith says:

Premier Paula Cox called on the electorate to not “be fooled” and send a message that “we find it offensive when their consultant uses terms like black surrogates”

…but its ok for members of her party to call others ‘House Ni@@ers’ on the radio.

    Me thinks double standards.

    • eewoo says:

A consultants report for a now defunct party that is five years out of date.

If the Premier is so upset about it then why doesn’t she complain to the consultant about what he wrote five years ago for a now non existent political party.

Is that the best you can come up with. How pathetic.

  29. Why says:

I’m voting oba. I’m tired of plp’s divisiveness! I voted plp before but not Monday. Plp will not get my vote. And may God bring peace, safety and love to this island. The place I call home…. Bermuda. May God bless us all as we move forward..

  30. Terry says:

    Where is the Accountant General.

    I smell an Erat.

  31. Loquatz says:

The whole “us versus them” theme of the PLP campaign has turned me off them forever.
Ah, but she “requires you to vote”.
    ROFLMAO

  32. island girl says:

Here we go again! Sorry Madame Premier..your Government have fooled the people of Bermuda for 14 YEARS and we are tired of the hatred in speeches give by your ministers and PLP cronies! I will definitely NOT be voting PLP. Bermuda needs a real change for the better..not the cr*p we have had to endure for 14 YEARS!

  33. Soooo says:

And what did the PLP’s consultant say? It’s amusing how the PLP’s election stratagy so closely resembles that of Michael Markham’s report for the Young Progressives “Electoral Strategy of Racist Politics” written whilst he was a member of the PLP.

    • Uh oh!!! says:

Could not agree more & how could anyone vote for a woman that is not inclusive . . . She’s not getting my vote! Hope she is booted out of her seat before her party has to boot her out of Clifton & unfortunately with a feckin big pension after causing so much damage & not only as a cog in the wheel!

  34. Bermyman says:

The PLP is not the same party that was voted in 98. They are self serving, lazy and want nothing more than free cars, expense accounts and trips. These people have turned this once proud Jewel of the Atlantic into a Clown Colony, no better than the Turks and Caicos. We are better than that! 400 years of survival into one of the richest nations per population on the planet. With a high standard of living and a good social structure to our names, we are so very close to losing it all because an inept Government want people to believe they are entitled to their position because black Bermuda has got their back. Well I hope that black Bermuda, who’s heritage is the foundation of this island realize that the only backs these people in the PLP have are their own ministers. We could be living in a very poor and desperate country if something does not change soon. Vote OBA! why not give them a shot at turning things around!!

    • swing voter says:

well said….it took the UBP 30+ years to self destruct….thanks to one individuals and a few henchmen, the PLP have disappointed every swing voter that handed them they reigns in 1998.

  35. Bermyman says:

Everyone should read this no matter what their political persuasion.

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

Sherri J will not read any real comments from this thread except the once that either she or her boss find offensive or derogatory to the PLP. That’s how she’s done it so far.

LOL sorry if I spelled your name wrong Mrs. Sherri J. never seen you name on anything not that I pay attention to things like that since I have never met you and don’t get me wrong I’m no knocking you at all by all accounts your a good lookin lady and I like you fiery personality. ;)

      LOL

  36. Argosy says:

    :…send them a message.”

Us & them again, divisive, race baiting….again!

She CANNOT run on her record so divert attention.

Madame Premier, thanks to you and your PLP party, this Island is in deep trouble and the ONLY way we are going to fix this is by uniting and pulling together and hopefully move forward.

It’s unconscionable that you would choose cheap, divisive tactics simply to gain an advantage at the polls, while BDA continues to slip behind and tear itself apart.

Your record in the past 5 years and the campaign that you have seen fit to run clearly show your total lack of even a remote grasp of the situation facing us and also an pathetic lack of leadership.

It’s past time for you to hang up your shingle and let someone else get on with leading Bermuda onward and upwards. We have had more than our fill of unethical behaviour (a.k.a corruption). cronyism, waste, incompetence, mismanagement, excuses, cost overuns, and all this financed by spiraling debt.

Hopefully enough voters will make the right choice on Monday.

  37. are you serious says:

All of Bermuda is up in arms over this “secret” report that emerged, three weeks prior to the election. It seems that one of the more offensive parts of the secret report refers to black surrogates. Words are important and I am a student of etymology. For me, it is important to know the origin, history and true meaning of words. The word surrogate comes from the Latin word, “surrogatus”, which is the present participle of the word “surrogare” which means “put in another’s place, substitute” – surrogate comes from the word sub, which means in the place of or under , and the word “rogation”, which is derived from the Latin word “rogare” which means to ask or propose. The word “rogation” literally means to stretch out (the hand).

So a surrogate is one that is appointed to take the place of another. Let me ask you something. When Darius Tucker, Dawn Simmons and Marcus Jones held the press conference to release the earth shattering news that a “secret” report had been discovered, who do you think they were acting for? They were acting at the behest of their party…ERGO they were acting as black surrogates. Put in that light, being a black surrogate doesn’t seem so offensive now, does it. Of course, there are those members of the public who will continue to take exception and state that it was the OBA’s intention to use blacks as puppets for those members of the UBP who wanted to come back into power. In light of the fact that on today, 5 December 2012, 3,000 people are unemployed and 7,000 are underemployed, is focusing on a “secret” report where our attention needs to be?

    • raisedbyasurrogate says:

My parents dies when I was a little boy. I was raised by a Surrogate family. They took the place of my real parents but it didnt matter. They still loved me like their own and gave me a wonderful chance. I know whats its like to live with the word more than most of you and its not the word that makes the man or woman. Its who they are and what they stand for.

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

So what you think about the other report about the PLP by a PLP consultant now ex PLP consultant you know the racist statigies report. Would have been just before and during Premier Dr. Browns term.

      LOL

  38. Like It Is says:

    PLP

    ALL THE WAY!!!!

ok ok ,attack me now you guys.

    • CBA says:

No attacking. If you haven’t realised by now that they haven’t done a good job and have made the island poor then there really is no helping you. I guess that’s why you were ignored.

      • Like It Is says:

The PLP havent made the island poor, the OBA hasnt done their job, and gripe at everything the PLP do.

I dont trust the OBA, I look at them and see worse times not better.

most of them have no proven track record and will never get MY vote, or the vote of many, but keep doing your thing.

        Peace.

        • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

What did the PLP do. 13 years in power.

All I ask is that you list 1 positive thing the party did for each year in power that did not involve a scam, investigation, misapropriation of public money, contract awarded without RFP or SDO.

Should be easy for all te PLPers out there – to come up with one for each year – 13 things – that is it!

I bet nobody can do it.

        • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

By the way – no proven track record.
Look at the candidates and see the companies they started, grew and still run. Look at their positions, educational background, experience and criminal erecords and compare it to the PLp ministers.

You can fool some people sometimes – but you can’t fool all te people all the time.

  39. Um Um Like says:

Paula & all those “standing strong” – buy one way tickets to Martha’s Vineyard.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

The house is big enough to accommodate them all. Right next to a golf course too.

  40. Soooo says:

FutureCare… What can I say, a family member who is now on FutureCare pays 25% more now that they did as a retiree form a small company that fell to the economy. Government is subsidizing Futurecare anyway! So why not let a company that does insurance well run a cut-rate seniors insurance and Government subsidize……. Would have saved us millions in developing a mediocre system.. Millions that could have gone to helping seniors

  41. pebblebeach says:

Madame Premier you want my vote, then you should have visited my home as I waited for you for days on end and nothing, absolutely nothing. I had a few matters I was so looking forward to discussing with you.

Sorry, you had my vote during that historic moment in 1998 and rest assured, you will not get it on Monday.

  42. Ryan says:

Yes, send them a message Bermuda… by voting the PLP *out*, and the OBA in!

    It’s time for change!

  43. 32n64w says:

So the PLP’s entire election strategy is to point fingers at a document that was allegedly prepared for a now defunct party. A report that was addressed in the media 2009 years ago during which time it was rejected and as the facts have proven, never adopted.

The PLP’s record is simply so bad the only angle they could take was to sink deeper and deeper into the gutter.

Is this the sort of juvenile, unprofessional and thoughtless leadership Bermuda needs right now? I didn’t think so.

    Bermuda deserves better.

    Bermudians deserve better.

    Vote for change.

    Vote OBA.

  44. kevin says:

There is no need to attack those of you who believe we are on the right track , no need to degrade you no need to name call ….it is truly what you believe …when you step in the polling booth on monday you will either vote for PlP or change yes even if an independant happens to be voted in it will be a change ….you have to vote for what you believe in and not some story about going backwards …it is fact we have gone back to far already…it is truly a time to take Bermuda on a new tact …

  45. bermudian through and through says:

She’s less than a cog in the wheel at this point. She knows FULL WELL that that stupid report has NOTHING to do with the OBA. Nothing. And secondly, does she truly only see herself as the so-called leader of people who support the PLP? Seriously? Who’s the leader for the people who don’t vote for the PLP? Are those people unrepresented? We need a leader for ALL of Bermuda….not just a select few.

    • Family Man says:

Remember the Colonel’s infamous words …”We don’t care what you think.”

Send the Col. a message; We don’t care for your representation.

    • Moojun says:

I agree, where have all the Statesmen gone? all we get are self-serving politicians who think 4 years ahead at best. We are in desperate need of leaders who think at least one generation ahead. Please Bermuda give us someone who can inspire us. All I see are candidates who seek to divide us.

  46. Real Talk (original) says:

As somebody who voted for the PLP in 2 out of the last 3 elections I can say unequivocally that this is not the change that I first voted for in ’98. I am extremely disappointed with where this Government has led us.
They need an exercise in humility in 2012 just like the UBP did in 1998… an opportunity to do some soul-searching would serve them well.

    • over soon.. says:

I think that is the best way to describe why the OBA is so different from the old UBP.. (aside from new members).

That soul searching. Realizing what the people are tired of.

I am highly confident that the new party has learned from the formers mistakes… thats not to say they wont make some themselves, but i do no believe for a second that voting in the OBA is the same as voting back in the UBP. People do learn.

Every time i am told off at work, i change my behavior, not anticipate the time that i can do it again.

  47. Legal Eagle says:

The same as it was time for a change in 1998–14 years later,it’s now time for a change again! Political Parties who stay in power too long, eventually serve only themselves and their party elite, and NO LONGER their voters–if they ever did!!

  48. whatever says:

A compilation of all the PLP campaign slogans thus far. Wow. I sure hope she didn’t write that speech.

  49. Get a grip says:

I am so disappointed with Madam Premier. I was excited when she was voted in as I was when the PLP were voted in in 1998. Bermuda needed a change. The UBP got complacent and they did not always have the peoples needs at heart.

Now all I hear from the PLP on the eve of an election is mudslinging at the OBA. This is the time to reenforce what you WILL do in the future. Sell how good you are so you convince the swing voters. But no you are just stooping to new lows. Madam Premier, you are an intelligent woman and to constantly bring up a so called “secret” report that was not written for the OBA, and by the way was only a report and not agreed by the UBP as a whole is immature and ridiculous. The UBP is no longer. Would someone get that through their heads. And dont give me the answer that the OBA is the UBP because if you are going to look at the amount of people that were UBP that are now in the OBA then look within at the amount of PLP that were UBP and the amount of people in the OBA that were PLP. You cannot look at it single sided. It goes both ways. What is the double standard going on with the PLP advertising on public property but the OBA had to remove their advertisements. You should be leading by example – and you are – bad example. Rallies at Government Schools, signs on Parsons Road on Government parkland. Right is right and wrong is wrong.

I am a small business owner that gets no benefits because we are not situated in a certain area. We cant all have offices in these limited areas. What happened to helping the people – all people. The Government is not here to serve one set of people, they should be serving ALL people and if they aren’t they shouldnt be running for office. True character is shown when a person can admit mistakes, learn from them and move on. You dont hear that from the Government. They make is sound like they have done nothing wrong despite the fact that we are in debt 1.5 billion.

Please people, vote for a change. We need a team who are interested in the needs of everyone. Hold them accountable and remind them of their promises.

  50. M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

Well , well , well , here we are . Already we are standing on the eve of the most important election thus far this century . Who will win ? Who will lose ?
I like the OBA , I like the people ,I think they have a very talented team with great promise . Only thing that’s rubs me the wrong way is the way the party was formed , and the reason it was formed . Of course everybody wants to win . In 2007 the economy was overheated and Bermuda had so much money in circulation that it was scary . The banks were practically giving money away . So the reason that the UBP was disbanded had nothing to do with the way the country was run , it was more to do with the desire to assume control over a country flush with cash . Today again it’s all about the economy but the terrible state of the economy , fair enough . OBA I wish you well !

I Love the PLP , I really Love the PLP … I probably fit into the category of the PLP diehard who loves their party but like Ms. Battersbee had absolutely no time for the former premier . I have never sided with him or defended his time in office , it was quite an embarrassing time for most PLP supporters and I apologize to anyone and every one he has hurt in word or deed . I will continue to support my party and I wish it well going into election MONDAY .

    • Media says:

This is the first post from you that sounds sincere. It’s a good start.

      • Sugra says:

Thank you for your honesty, Monty.

Getting down to brass tacks, the real question for the electorate is; which party is more motivated to improve our situation as a country?

That’s what we need from the next Government… motivation, energy and enthusiasm.

I’m afraid that won’t be achieved by giving a mandate to an underperforming incumbent.

  51. One says:

If all Paula and friends have got is to refer to a report that was previously made public and addressed by Dunkley then she and they are out of ammunition. If anyone should be offended i would think it would reasonably be Craig Cannonier and all his supporters who were never part of the UBP being cast in the same mould all beause the PLP have nowhere to go with their record.

  52. Not Again says:

I don’t care how bad the people say the OBA is my vote is going for them. I think the deserve a chance i am so sure they wil not be any worse then the PLP they the OBA have to prove themselves so i am sure they will.

  53. Truth (Original) says:

yall dont know anything about hardwork and dedication, but you would talk to the people and try to have them believe that.

Regular programming just interrupted by Paula speaking with her well practiced accent about all the wonderful things they are going to do. Really? You wait until election time to come up with all these ideas. We see through your B.S. Quit telling us that together this and together that. Your government got us in this mess so you fix it . You were and still are the minister of finance, isn’t that convenient. You directly played a part in the financial distress of the island so your words fall on deaf ears. Our household is sending a strong message with a vote for the OBA

  58. Balanced Facts says:

I was thinking along the same lines – that this is a very unhappy looking group brought together for a family photo that nobody really wants. Seriously, the saying that a picture is worth a hundred words was never truer and win or lose, this does not bode well. Interesting that the Col. Has been missing in action from most if not all of the recent family shots.

  59. Familiar says:

The last I’m going to say on the election is this.

If you’re registered to vote, get out there and vote.

Please vote on what’s important, issues… not skin colour.

And regardless of who wins… let us all hold their feet to the fire to get Bermuda out of this place it’s in, and to someplace better, all of us, together.

Atleast I know what I have been getting, dont wanna get Scr£$$d with no vaseline.

    • Victor says:

Pal, you’ve been taking it up the proverbial you know where for the past fourteen years without the vaseline.

  61. Triangle Drifter says:

Send Paula, & the PLP shot caller, a message. Vote the PLP out. Vote for your future, your children’s future, your grand children’s future. Bermuda is a decade into debt now. Don’t make it longer. The PLP experiment failed & it failed miserably.

  62. Time Passages says:

Very very very sad to see that PLP is bringing it all down to race. It is quite simply all they have. Vote these evil people out.

  63. theothersidebda says:

I will surely send ‘them’ people in power a message on Monday. This is one of the few sensible statements from the PLP that I actually support. Your wish is my command.

  64. w$%$#larestupid says:

    bye bye oba

    PLP will win this election.

    (from another poster)

    U – using
    B – Black
    P – people

    O – One
    B – Black
    A – at a time

  65. sickandtired says:

I just want this election to be done and over with cause I’m getting sick of all this. Once again all this petty back and forth BS is just too much and unnecessary . PLP has not once come straight with what they are going to do to help this country get back on its feet. All they have been doing is tearing down and criticizing what the OBA is trying to bring forward. This election is clearly bringing out the worst in people.

  66. God says:

The PLP can only win using RACE because they have nothing else to stand on!

yeah and for 12 cursed years the racist PLP has shoved RACE down our throats to the point it makes us want to vomit.
    “WHITES HAVE TO SUFFER.”
remember that quote from the PLP?

How they took jobs from qualified whites and gave them to underqualified blacks, simply based on their skin colour?

Meanwhile the PLP has plundered Bermuda financially, and left us so far in debt that it exceeds America’s debt proportionally by far.

The PLP can only win using RACE because they have nothing else to stand on!

Get those racist people out of government once and for all!!!

END THE BLACK AND WHITE TALK!!!!!!

    Vote in OBA!!!!!!!

The PLP has its roots in Black Supremacy, Black Panthers, Brown Berets…. is this really a good thing? NO!!!!!!

That is why they are always pumping their fists in the air, it is their power symbol.

    • M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

That’s a lie . You should be ashamed of yourself , so much anger , so much misguided emotion . I know a great psychologist who has dealt very successfully with cases even more severe than yours .

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

Were you one of his success stories…………………

        LOL

  67. Triangle Drifter says:

Monday is the one day in 5 years the people can have their say in Government.

    Don’t blow it Bermuda.

  68. small fry says:

PLP message is very clear. Even though we have not been a good government – ddn’t vote for us, vote against the OBA. They have convinced me how to vote on Monday…..

  69. Concerned says:

St. David’s voter – they made it possible for me to vote- yuh been tripping ever since.

  70. James Tucker says:

………so all said and done, at the end of the day it’s back down to “vote for us cause we’re black.”?
    no thanks.

  71. GOD 1st says:

  72. GOD 1st says:

Does major glenn brangman and PLP have any connections? why is this men out on bail given the fact he was given a custodial sentence. And he is allowed to be out on bail ,he should be in jail waiting the outcome of the sentence.PLP and bermuda regiment do have connections that is why this government suppoA custodial sentence is a judicial sentence, imposing a punishment (and hence the resulting punishment itself) consisting of mandatory custody of the convict, either in prison (incarceration) or in some other closed therapeutic and/or (re)educational institution, such as a reformatory, (maximum security) psychiatry or drug detoxification (especially cold turkey). For some crimes, such as cases of child sexual abuse, a custodial sentence is almost inevitable.rts conscription forcing grown men against their will.

  75. GOD 1st says:

You have a few elders in this country teaching young blacks to hate people based on the color of their skin. As i am black i don’t need any negativity for you are demonizing and dividing humanbeings. The human race is a beautiful race. It is not about color we all need a better Bermuda.

  76. GOD 1st says:
