This story is sad is so many ways, many families are still suffering from this senseless act. It was wrong to take a life and the teen knew better; but try him as an adult, I’m not too sure. If the adults who will no doubt comment, consider their mentality at 15 it will help us realize that we did some stupid things at that age. If you understood the home environment, the shunning received in the school environment and other social factors, many of us may have a similar viewpoint on the value of life. Yes, this young man needs a serious lesson, however punitive ramifications will not deter nor rehabilitate this youth and others who have a mentality like him. This is the bigger picture that Bermuda needs to digest, and until we do, we will never be able to get a handle on crime.
well said.
I agree that when we were younger…at the age of 15 yrs.old, yes we did do some stupid things!!! But killing someone ,that is out of the question!!Bermuda has a lot of things to sort out as far as these senseless murders and at the age of 15 you definitely kno right from wrong, and killing someone is definitely a NO NO!! He needs to be dealt with and made an example out of,we can’t keep making excuses for these behaviours!!! It’s not Exceptable!! Either way killing someone (ANOTHER HUMAN BEING)whether it be by GUN or Any other object, need to be able to deal with the consequences ok! Taking someones life is SERIOUS!!! Malcom’s family is still mourning the lost of their son, brother, grandson cousin etc.. He needs to be tried as an adult, unless he is mentally ill then I’ll say put him somewhere he can get help but if that is not the case,he shall be punished!!
Rashaun – You had better be down on your knees EVERYDAY asking God to forgive you
He deserves no forgiveness but only to burn in hell along with anybody who pities him! I wish we had the death penalty so it could happen sooner….Anyone who maliciously takes a life should be put to death !
You calling for the death penalty to be reintroduced is straight up idiotic, anyone who is sentenced to death for maliciously taking someone’s life should be punished correct but sentencing them to death is above being hypocritical… If you don’t want individuals in our society to fight fire with fire why should we allow government to do it?.. To show our upcoming youths that that’s the way to display justice?? Honestly you should think before you comment because you make Bermudians look ignorant
sorry I don’t agree. In cases like this one where the murderer admits to doing the crime and the evidence supports it…hang them!
Fact: Those that have been sentenced to death have a 0% repeat offending rate!
How would you feel if you saw the murderer of someone in your family walking the streets of Bermuda with their wife and child- happy as can be! I live it!
@ just me Obviously you a Bermudian right? Cause right now you are the one sounding like an idiot ok!! So tell us what you suggest should happen to these perpetrators that are committing all these offences huh? Idunno if you have been sleeping for the past 5 to 10 years or what, but these fools are committing these offences constantly..Why? Because some of those who are locked up or have been locked up find it a 5 Star Hotel that us the community is paying for!! I feel that if they had some type of Capital Punishment for these perpetrators then they would think before they even try to take someone’s life!! The Bible says do unto others as you would have them do unto you!!
@ Single Mom @”I get knocked down..but I get up again”… I know ur probably frustrated but introducing the death penalty will NOT change anything and it will especially not bring Malcom back which is the only possible way for his family to reach closure. Capital punishment will only make individuals more sick and extremely dangerous because muurders will know once they are apprehended they will be sent to rest so while they are loose they will create as much malice as posssible… @”I get knocked down..but I get up again” by seeing that individual who caused you harm you do have a right to be upset but on the other hand at least that person isn’t still killing and is obviously trying to turn their life around which is the purpose of prison.. @Single Mom retribution is just another word for revenge, and the desire for revenge is one of the lowest human emotions perhaps sometimes understandable, but not really a rational response to a critical situation. To kill the person who has killed someone close to you is simply to continue the cycle of violence which ultimately destroys the avenger as well as the offender because It contaminates the otherwise good will which any human being needs to progress in love and understanding. Now answer me this… You think your God would find it right if you killed a 15 yr old boy in retaliation to his action or would he rather you justify it by helping him turn his life around and become a better person?… Do i still sound like an idiot? or you gonna find another quote out of that book that wasn’t even written by the person its about?
U need prayer…..
@ RashaunBurninHell , u need prayer….
15 year old that committed murder, plead guilty..sounds like a sentence of about 15 years max
jus a little food for thought …needs to be watched by everyone… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3lw6PMjj40

Malcolm is DEAD!! he has NOTHING!!!His parents have to go to a grave yard were they CANT see him or talk to him all they have is a tomb stone and memories!! They have to pay funeral bills!! They have to pack up his life in boxes!! I bet jail is sounding alot better then DEATH right now!!

@Shut the f%^$ down You sound like you need to Shut the f^%$ up!! We must feel sorry for him because he took another young man’s life!! You can’t be serious!!He stabbed the young man more then 5 times so that was definitely no damn mistake!! And as far as I am concerned ,15 yrs old or not ,he kno’s right from wrong and he knew at the age of 15 what could happen to him or n e one for that matter ,for killing someone!! It’s not our fault he is in prison,he had a choice and he chose to selfishly take Malcolm’s life,so really he should get the Maximum sentence, let him know that killing someone is no joke!! And for the record if I knew who you were I’d walk right up to your face and give you one hard slap! SERIOUSLY!!” Keep your head up Shun” you sound like friends and family of these accused murderers!! Damn Idiot you are!!
t’s no wonder this island is in the state that it is in….just read all the hateful, nasty comments when articles such as this are posted…. I am in no way condoning what Rashaun has done and I also know that name calling (irritated that this is even allowed under pen names) and put downs will not bring Malcolm back…Whilst some may FEEL that Rashaun was old enough to know better this may not be the case once the Social Enquiry report is completed…who’s to say that he functions on the level of a 15 year old and I am saying this from a point of professionalism and not pity. We don’t know anything about this young man other than he has readily admitted to such a serious crime. To those that call for the death penaly that too is murder no matter which way you look at it as NO ONE has the right to take the life of another. With that said please note that the death penalty will not be brought back anytime soon…..
A previous post states,”F#** this guy and his parents should be lashed also for raising such an animal”…wow really?? Why is that? Do you REALLY feel that his parents RAISED him to commit such an act…I don’t think so…
This is an awful thing that has happened and BOTH families are left to mourn and suffer this is not easy for anyone….family…friends many are left trying to deal with this tragedy……At the end of the day NO ONE is going to be satisfied with the sentence he receives, I mean who would? how do you equate a prison sentence with the loss of life? It can’t be done…..
Rashaun at the end of the day has to “answer to his OWN demons” as they say..there’s nothing that I or anyone else can do or say…I may not be too popular when I say this but Rashaun I would like to thank you for “owning up” and acknowledging your wrong doing and not wasting the courts time by pleading “Not Guilty” like many men in the same predicament tend to do.
To Malcolm’s parents I had the pleasure of being in Malcolm’s Company whilst working at the Afterschool Program. I remember him being friendly, courteous, well mannered and helpful. Words cannot truly express how wonderful a person he was and I sympathise with you on your loss.
I often get disheartened when I read some of the comments and lately have been “shying away” from commenting because I cannot handle all the negativaty and hatred that is constantly put forth …
We constantly continue to worry about being politically correct. We push away from Capital Punishment and push towards why, why, why did little Jimmy do what he did. I’m always frustrated at how many youths I see “dressed like gangsters” and are tattooed with MOB, GAngsta, Killa (teardrops) etc… and as soon as they committ a crme there are all sorts of Social Inquiry Reports, tests, social assistance, legal aide etc. Meanwhile the victims and their families must sit back with no help, no assistance no grievance help and little legal support!!! They are victimized twice!
Then you see these “gangsters” all of a sudden learn how to address the judge, take direction from their lawyers, dress in a suit and tie, and cover up their gang tats- why to fool and impress the Judge and Jury!
I too was sympathetic until a family member became an innocent victim of a crime. They were not guilty by association, a product of their enviroment, a drug user or a gangster. They were just someone that was in the wrong place at the wrong time!
Meanwhile, he is gone and the murderer will be out (with good behavior) before their child becomes a teenager! Whats wrong with this picture?
Sometimes, when the Judge and Jury doesn’t get it correct and the lawyers lie to protect their clients – the family and friends (that still suffer) must become the executioner! Two wrong s don’t make a right – but it sure as heck makes it even.
Before you judge my opinions – take a walk in my shoes.
I won’t judge your comment because you are entitled to it just as I am too mine. In my comment I have stated nothing but FACTS so I have no qualms about that. However, working in the capacity of a Behavioral Therapist I know the reality of people having troubled minds so its not a matter of being sympathetic it is a reality and the course of justice (worldwide, not just here)prevails and social enquiry reports and the like are protocal.
If “getting even” brings you and others relief than thats on you that is something that you all will have to live with and at the end of the day YOU now become THAT person that committed the crime in the first place….
“He who feels it knows it”……
@Tricks are for kids . . .point well taken. I agree in our field of behavior therapy, we have to assess the individuals state of mind, against his cognitive and emotional functioning level, however at the same time we must ensure that in doing so, unless the perpetrator is mentally ill, he must be held fully responsible for his behavior.
In this case, given the details that were released in the media, he is not mentally ill. He had full awareness of what he was doing, by the mere fact that he attempted to elude the police, and pleaded not guilty for almost two years.
He clearly has made some poor choices at a tender age that has led to his now unfortunate circumstances. My only concern with social inquiry reports, is how complete and detailed are they? How far back do the actually look. From what I know, this young man has had behavioral problems for quite some time, has received services, all of which he made a choice to behave in the manner of his choosing, which ultimately led to this.
Now, it is time fir him to be held accountable….man crimes = man consequences.
Kids grasp the concept of death at the age of seven. They understand the permanence of death then. So Shunny knew what he was doing, killed another human being, and should be tried as an adult. Never mind how he was brought up; we probably all have sad stories along the way, but we don’t all kill.
Keep your head down, Shunny. Don’t look up again until someone speaks to you, then drop it down fast.
@ shut the f#*ck dwn since u feel so sorry for him after he took somone life hes been in jail since he was 15 who cares a$$ he killed sombody he deserves watever punishment he get how bout sombody murders your family member you make off bout it then somebody comes along tellin u 2 lay dwn. the f#@k dwn ya u what u gone say then u tellin him keep his head up wtf what about the person he killed nobody gives a f#*k bout him k n I hope he gets nuff time 2 learn his self A lesson
@ shut the F#*ck Ive been jail n its not hard @ all BDA jails a joke they should send his lil a$$ JA jail
Independent of the punishment that is meted out to this young murderer, he will be released when he is in his 30′s or 40′s. Therefore, it is imperative that he receive help while in prison. Help meaning some sort of psychological assistance and be taught a useful skill so that upon release from prison, he will not just be a hardened, angry menace to society.
Although this view may be unpopular, it is reality… he will be released from prison one day… what do we as a society want when this happens;a remorseful, skilled individual that can positively contribute to society or a monster that will wreak havoc on society?
jjj
ppl are hateful as can be…..to all those who said this yout should burn in hell n his parents should get lashed i hope god is watchin over you cuz yh twice as bad as this yout who done this like wur is ur sense of humor, yes he should be punished n i feel sorry for melz family n friends but we as ppl have to stop judging ppl but i can say since growing up with shonny’s older brother n watching rashun grow up he wasnt well he has serious issue’s now if you grow up n those issues dont get addressed yes you end up not giving a f%ck, and if you don’t show ppl like rashun love or even show him how much you care ,they will do anything with out a care in the world..
While I know this is hard for the family of Rashun, it is equally hard for the family of Malcolm. We are focusing on Rashun’s age, however at some point we as a society as parents must look at the behavior of our children. If you are demonstrating behaviors of a man, you must be prepared for the consequences of a man.
Some have questioned whether at 15 years old if Rashun had the emotional capability to understand what his outcomes were. Yes he did. He at a very young age chose a “certain” lifestyle, with the spoken attitude that “It’s the way it is” . . .he took on a thug like mentality, without assessing the repercussions of his actions. He chose not to listen to those influential adults who were attempting to steer him in a different direction than the one he was choosing!
Yes I agree he is young, however whatever sentence he is given, upon his release, he has time to live his life in a different manner than that of which landed him in prison.
Our boys must understand: “THEIR CHOICES, THEIR ACTIONS = THEIR CONSEQUENCES!!!”
Thank you – I agree lets stop making excuses about why they do what they do and start holding them accountable for what they do! Let those that are tempted to do wrong learn from the hardships of others instead of the current mindset.
My guess is that his young man will
a) get a break on his sentance because he pleaded guilty and did not “waste the courts time”
b) get a further break because he was under 16
c) get another break because a social inquiry will likely turmn up things like, “dad wasn’t around” or “mom always worked” or “I never felt loved” or I couldn’t take the pressure.
d) he will not go to Westgate right away due to his age
e) he will be given a reduction in sentancing due to vercrowding and good behaviour equal to 50% of his sentance.
Prediction: Judge gives him 12 years. He spends 2 at the Prison Farm , 3 at Westgate when he is old enough and then another 1 or 2 at Prison Farm to get him “ready” for his realease into society. Out in 7 years/ Meanwhile the Family of the victim suffers for life! Every Christmas, he opens gifts – the victims faily cries at their loss.
RIP Best. You are surely missed. I love you with all my heart and forever will. He will get dealt with one way or another, weather that’s through the system or god. No worries
