Shooting In Sandys, 22-Year-Old Man Injured
[Updated: Police confirm that a 22-year-old man was injured in a shooting in the Beacon Hill area of Sandys at around 10pm. His injuries are not considered to be life threatening. As of 11.30am on Wednesday morning, the shooting victim is listed as stable in the ICU]
At some time around 10pm this evening [Mar 19] there was a shooting in the Sandys area, and unofficial reports indicate someone has been injured. Details are limited at this time, however we will update as able.
Update 10.46pm: Unofficial reports indicate the shooting victim is in his early 20s.
Update 10.55pm: There is a heavy police presence in the Scotts Hill Road/Beacon Hill Road area of Sandys, and crime scene tape is also visible.
Update 10.59pm: An ambulance, with what appeared to be a police escort, just arrived at KEMH, and someone was transported into the hospital.
Update 11.07pm: The police have confirmed that there was a shooting in the Beacon Hill, Sandys parish area, and also confirmed that was one person was injured. The police presence remains outside KEMH, which is standard when a shooting victim is brought in.
Update 11.25pm: The police remain on scene, and can be seen searching the ground using flashlights
Update 11.37pm: Minister with Portfolio Leah Scott — the MP for C#30 Southampton East Central — is on scene. She said we have to stop the violence, and said it will take a collaborative effort. The audio of her statement is below.
Update 11.49pm: Police Spokesperson Robin Simmons confirmed the shooting happened at around 10pm, and said the victim is a 22-year-old man. His injuries are not considered to be life threatening. The video of Mr Simmons statement is below.
Update 2.49am: The police statement said, “Around 10pm on Tuesday, March 19th police officers responded to a report of gunshots in the Beacon Hill Road, Scott’s Hill Road Sandys parish area where a 22 year old man was shot and injured.
“The victim was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. At this time his injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
“Inquiries into this confirmed firearm incident are ongoing and witnesses or anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the main police number on 295-0011 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.”
Update Mar 20, 11.33am: As of this time, the shooting victim is listed as stable in the ICU

I am really starting to question policing methods in this country.
They would patrol during daylight hours for traffic offenders especially during morning rush hour. How many road fatalities/accidents happen during morning rush hour? Why dont police patrol nights or keeps an eye of who leaves the bar and hops on a bike??
It amazes me how they can be out in full force at uneccessary times but when it comes to serious crimmes like gun violence they are real lax and do not seem to strategize.

I have questioned the methods of these clowns for years, here we have an over equiped and under performing BPS with a leadership thats laughed at from inside and outside and are completely useless when it comes to either detering, solving or even understanding the crimes in Bermuda, sure they look like a real police service when the speed to the incident in vast numbers running around like they are on an episode of “cops’ but there it ends.
Their strategy appears to be hide all day and night until joe public gets involved and gives them enough information that they may be able to do something, and clearly with the lack of respect they have in our community that doesnt happen very often. Perhaps if some of the “leadership” took an intrest in whats going on instaed of hiding in an office waiting on the pension kicking in we would be in better shape and less fearful of teenage murderers running around our streets with guns that the police cant or dont want to catch, why doesnt the Governor call for an enquiry into the less than effective BPS then simply replace those under performers at the top to give Bermuda a service that we can depend on.

What really drives the nail in the coffin is that our current government has cut funding public youth camps to give more to the police. What will the parents who cant afford the $200 – $300 a week camps do with their kids when breaks come up because the cheaper government camps can’t afford to run? OBA’s turning a blind eye to the kids of low income parents will only strengthen the wanksters pull on those kids.
Millions more to the police? The milkman is a farce who should stick to his cows & leave the government alone.

When are the police going to start being proactive. I know what some will say, the police can’t do it all. But the sad reality is these crap heads are shooting people every so often and have even killed innocent people. Remember the police are the only ones allowed to lawfully carry firearms so they must take a more proactive roll and stop speeding from one end of the island to the next after an incident has already happened and the crap head has left the scene.
I feel for the officers on patrol that aren’t armed. I wouldn’t want their job. They are playing with their lives.
Whats your definition of proactive if someone gets shot in residential area at 10pm at night on a Tuesday night?? Are the police supposed to be parked outside people’s houses waiting for things to happen, and then drive back to the station and solve the unsolved crimes, prevent all the people who are not responsible enough to plan to get home safely after being out drinking, prevent people from speeding on the roads 24 hours a day, stop all the break-ins before they occur??

The problem with people, who say that the police cannot be everywhere and that the police cannot know where the next crime will happen, is your looking for excuses as to justify the lack of action by the police. I will concede that the police cannot be everywhere and know when a crime will actually occur. However, the Bermuda Police are not a proactive police force; they are a reactionary force. In that they do not patrol constantly, they follow Great Britain in having a mostly unarmed force, which makes absolutely no sense. I have been told that only 3 police cars patrol out of Sandy’s. Surely that is not enough patrol cars to combat 911 calls and just simply makes no sense. I think Bermuda’s biggest problem is accountability and respect from the top down. The laws are to keep the little man down while it protects the people in authority. Officers get paid about $7 or $8 thousand dollars per month. If they can’t be more proactive then how do they justify getting paid so much? Unless they are getting paid for clean-up services. I was told that part of an officer’s duty is to prevent crime and the protection of life and property. Well, the force isn’t doing much of that at all. Also Bermuda is a police state with over 400 officers to a population of about 70,000.
The point I am trying to make, and although this concept may be unrealistic to some, (And I am not saying that to be offensive or to seem sarcastic) but until we make a group effort to improve the mindset of individuals through better education, find ways to teach the youth to appreciate life more, to respect the next human being, (How many of us are guilty of watching movies filled with violence and the like in front of our children?? How many of us are guilty of buying video games where the main objective is to kill as many people as possible for our Children? How many people swear in front of their children? How many people don’t know how to practice self control and self discipline, yet want others to respect them?, How many of our women glorify the gangster lifestyle than disrespect the caring and compassionate guy in their day to day activities?)
Until we address the problems and circumstances that cause this type of behavior, you can bring in all the police man in the world, you will not address the core of the problem,,

I dont think it was literally meant to be outside every home but to be more present in the evening hours; driving around. More likely to be in the area of these incidents and have better chance of getting a trail or complete capture.

I’m sorry, but Police can’t be everywhere at once. Sure, they can “step it up” a little, but the reality is that the mindset of violence, anger, hatred, intollerance and belief that because of where you might live, or the clothes you wear, or the bike your ride, or the drugs you smoke might make you more or less important than the next person. That’s what’s got to be fixed. It happens at home, schools, churches, and neighbourhoods through collective postive social activity. That’s like saying that it’s better to ahve 100 fire extinguishers on hand to put out a fire you know is going to burn, instead of actually stopping the buring from happening in the first place! Fix the underlying cause. Take some responsibility for your children ad your family members!

If you were to apprehend him with violence, beacuse the assailant won’t volunteer, you the initial victim would then become the criminal and the offense will be assult…thats right you will be arrested for protecting your family. Actually, although most of the time the victim is in or affiliated with a gang it is not necessarily the case. One of my friends lives in a certain neighbourhood and because he has been seen frequently in that area by his home he has been attacked due to other gangs assuming he is part of the gang associated with that area. He attends college, studies hard and does well.
I am not saying that is necessarily the case in this situation but I do not think it is fair to categorize the victim of being gang affiliated solely on the basis of being a victim.

All this mention of Police reminds me just how naive, and far off the mark my Bermudian people are regarding the anti-social behavior which plagues the island.
This island is a breeding ground for anti-social behavior. Visit most of these guys homes and you can get an idea of how we came to this. No father, or dead-beat father, or sometime father. Mom who’s in her 40′s, but thinks she’s in her 20′s. No time to sit and do homework with the kids, too busy talking to their boo-boo’s on BB, or getting their hair done for the weekend out. And the rest are out working like slaves just to make ends meet. So who’s guiding and raising these kids? Where are their positive role models?
Talking about Police this late in the game is like telling someone to soak the codfish after they’ve already cooked it. Well now we gotta eat that salty codfish! But we can learn from our mistakes. The answer is in the homes. The family units. The structure and support that a young impressionable mind needs. Unfortunately, this generation is lost. We have no one to blame but ourselves. We’re all guilty. Most comments are written by scared citizens who can only let out their frustration on a bernews forum. What does that solve? Nothing. It just gives a little satisfaction that we’ve said our piece and can move on. If we were serious about fixing crime, we would truly act on our empty words.
Unfortunately there will be another shooting to allow us to say our piece and until it affects us personally, it’s business as usual. Who has the as weds to cure this problem? We do! It will take huge financial, time, Nd moral sacrifice because many of us have friends who we KNOW are involved in sketchy activity. I could go on, but it would turn into a long post that very few will read and even fewer will take seriously.

What is bothersome is that no one has addressed the issue of how these guys are still getting the bullets needed for these guns they are “reusing”. Unlike in the United States everything comes into Bermuda only by either AIR or SEA. Who are policing these entry points? Is it the Police or Customs? Who ever it is, why are these illegal items still getting past them? Is it time for “Operation Clean Sweep” in these two deaprtments? And if the Police know who these lawless individuals are who are committing these crimes why don’t they just go and get them? We know where they are at 9:00 a.m. Monday-Friday; home sleeping because they do not hold tax contributing jobs. While we are all at work they are all home sleeping off their “hard night’s work” of lawlessness. It’s time to put these individuals and their parents on alert they the Police are coming for them. So before you go making these comments stop and ask yourself has anyone in this crew ever taken a life and if so why did they not tell the police to bring them to justice. I don’t want to hear about being scared because at the end of the day if you saw them know them and dont TALK then you are worst then the murderer who commited the crime.
Secondly in life everything happens for a reason and as far as I can see people are Incarcerated and Sh.. still happens so when the in it happens when they are out it happens and you still blame them.
Now look at the real logic. Everything in life happens for a reason, so if you want to live like a thug then go down like a thug and stop blaming people for people wrong decisions which I feel is called following. FOLLOW your own mind half of the people you kill you have no reason don’t no them but because they are from a different area you feel you can take a life.
