Resume Writing Workshop Held In Somerset

March 23, 2013

The Somerset Economic Empowerment Zone in conjunction with Somerset Exempt Company SWISSedge Ltd. and The National Training Board hosted Ready, Aim, Hired! Interviewing & Resume Writing Workshop held at the Prince Albert Lodge in Mangrove Bay, Somerset on Thursday, March 21.

Some 15 coaches were on hand from the Somerset community, Bermuda Economic Development Corporation, and The National Training Board to provide interviewing and resume writing tips and techniques to a full audience within the Lodge hall.

Erica Smith, Economic Empowerment Zones Agency Director, welcomed attendees to the event and commented on the value of partnering with the National Training Board and SWISSedge to create Somerset community success.

Pandora Glasford, National Training Board Director, gave the opening remarks and spoke briefly on her organization’s role in helping Bermudians to find jobs, re-engineer themselves and to better prepare for the changing workplace. Dawn Simmons, event Project Manager, then provided attendees with an overview of the afternoon’s activities.

Attendees who needed major resume writing support were then organized separately where the National Training Board delivered a topical and quite spirited PowerPoint presentation by Allan Richardson and Derek Smith. All other attendees were paired with one-on-one coaches to begin a diverse range of consultations involving resume analysis, mock interviewing, and job search problem solving.

Attendees continually commented that they thought this format was effective as it gave attendees a chance to meet with more than one coach with the help of event facilitators ensuring all attendees circulated appropriately and that individual needs were met.

One attendee remarked “It is important for me to Thank You and let you know just how informative and helpful the Workshop yesterday was! You were very kind to spend so much time introducing me to the all the “right” people. I am very grateful.”

Another stated “Thank you sooo much for your insight, words and nuggets of wisdom and knowledge. I feel so inspired and regenerated!!!!! Look forward to working with you and acting on the information you gave. Keep doing what you are doing you are making a difference. God Bless you!!!”

A number of entrepreneurs also attended the event; some looking to participate within the Somerset Hidden Treasures Vendor Market; others desiring to network, share their products and services, and get tips on how to re-engineer their businesses.

Mid-way through the event, there was a feedback session where all coaches briefly communicated on success tips and techniques as a result of meeting with their individual attendees over the previous 90 minutes for the benefit of all attendees present.

Chan Arandjelovic, SWISSedge Director and event partner as well as William Spriggs of the Somerset Economic Empowerment Zone provided closing remarks.

The goal of this first workshop was to empower attendees with the necessary skills and abilities to gain successful employment, whether it may be full, part-time or self-employment. Attendees will be followed-up with to determine how they can be further supported and also to report their success in securing employment.
