Minister with winnersOn May 30th the winners of the Bermuda Blue Halo Writing competition were announced, with prizes being handed out to the students by Minister of the Environment Sylvan Richards.

The writing categories covered both essays and poetry with an environmental and marine theme. Submissions from young people from all over the island and the winners were very excited to have been chosen.

Minister Richards, in his address to the young writers, spoke of his love of writing and encouraged the budding writers to continue to perfect their skills, as writing is a skill that will serve them well throughout their lives. He also emphasized his pleasure that the children were so enthusiastic and concerned about the environment.

The winner in the poetry section was 12 year old Gabrielle Reid. Her entry “Whispers of the Sea” spoke of the hurt the ocean feels from pollution.

Nasir Simmons’ winning essay took the view that we should look at the ocean as our house and take better care of it. He asked, “If our house was polluted by people we did not know, how would we feel”?

Second place essay winner was Samuel Bleeker and third place went to Carlos Sousa. Hannah Horsfield won second place for her poetry entry and the third place poetry winner was Amori Simons.

Approximately 30 family and friends gathered to support the budding writers at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute. Also present were Minister for Finance Bob Richards, Permanent Secretary Dr Derrick Binns, and Jim Gleason from Ocean Support Foundation [OSF].

OSF, Marine Locker and Triangle Diving provided prizes for the students, while the Pew Charitable Trusts sponsored the event. The Blue Halo project is calling for a fully protected marine reserve around Bermuda, with a view to creating a marine legacy for future generations.
