Minister: Why Sports Was Added To Ministry Title
Minister of Community, Culture and Sports Wayne Scott spoke in the House of Assembly on Friday [July 26] to address the change in title of the Ministry of Community and Cultural Development to the Ministry of Community, Culture and Sports.
Minister Scott said, “The name change indicates that the Bermuda Government has listened to feedback and responded accordingly in order to continue to profile local and international sports.
“This government recognizes the integral role that sports plays in the life and social framework of our island. We concluded it was important to emphasize by title, the positive role that sports plays within our community.
“The government of Bermuda is negotiating with sports governing bodies to bring international sporting events here and we want our overseas partners to know how serious and committed our government is in the development of sports”.
Minister Scott’s full statement follows below:
Mr. Speaker, on Tuesday, 23rd July I announced that the title of the Ministry of Community and Cultural Development had been changed to the Ministry of Community, Culture and Sports.
Mr. Speaker, the move to include sports in the ministry title does not impact the organizational structure of my ministry. I will continue to have responsibility for the current departments namely:- Youth, Sport & Recreation; Human Affairs; Child & Family Services; Financial Assistance; Community & Cultural Affairs, Rent commission; the ministry headquarters including mirrors; as well as the Quango Bermuda housing corporation. The Ministry of Community, Culture and Sports will continue to be led by permanent secretary, Mr Wayne Carey.
Mr. Speaker, the name change indicates that the Bermuda government has listened to feedback and responded accordingly in order to continue to profile local and international sports. This government recognizes the integral role that sports plays in the life and social framework of our island. We concluded it was important to emphasize by title, the positive role that sports plays within our community.
Mr. Speaker, the unifying power of sport must not be understated. In Bermuda and throughout the world, sports provides a sense of purpose, national pride and builds community involvement; not to mention the overall health benefits of sports.
Mr. Speaker, the government of Bermuda is negotiating with sports governing bodies to bring international sporting events here and we want our overseas partners to know how serious and committed our government is in the development of sports.
Thank you Mr. Speaker!
