The Local Designer Showcase was hosted by City of Hamilton at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, featuring the work of various local designers including Alshante Foggo, Celine Morton, Juliana Gibbons, Alexandra Outerbridge, and Rene Hill.
According to the event programme, “Alshante Foggo’s debut Spring/Summer 2014 collection, Armour by Al, draws inspiration from references for and wide, early 90s hip hop to cultural phenom Lisa Frank and is influenced by her own island flavor. Bold degrade brights juxtaposed with black and white graphic prints are part of the brand’s DNA. Armour by Al exudes an irreverent individuality and expression unique to true street wear. Alshante was mentored by Christina Tung, Publicist for Fisher Footwear.”
Designer Celine Morton said: “Coco Chanel is my inspiration for this collection. Like Coco, I have used masculine tailored lectures in my designs. It is a party evening wear collection for young ladies between the ages of l5- 25 years. The collection consists of color blocking silks such as charmeuse, duchess, chiffon and organza paired with denims. Celine was mentored by Sam Broekema, Executive Accessories Editor for Harpers Bazaar Magazine.
Designer Juliana Gibbons said: “This collection was inspired by a heightened awareness of my surroundings. Taking something small, like fabric dye, or a small light reflection and really looking at how visually stunning it can be… While working with Raini Jaques as my mentor, I was able to fully develop designs that successfully bring by inspiration as a 2D concept, into 3D fashion execution.
Speaking on designer Juliana Gibbons, the event programme said: “The Emoticon Moody Collection is a playful collection of contemporary jewelry inspired by our generation’s transition into using short catch phrases, emoticons and symbols as signs of expressions and moods. The collection has a youthful yet classic play of everyday iconic symbols such as Smiley faces…. Alexandra was mentored by Nicole Chapoteau, the Accessories Director for Allure Magazine.”
Speaking on designer Rene Hill, the event programme said: “The collection Velvet Sunset was inspired by the astonishing sunset views from René Hill’s Warwick atelier. The collection, her first ready to wear line, is designed for today’: independent and confident woman who isn’t afraid to stand in her power – her femininity…Rene was mentored by Will Kahn, Town & Country Magazine’s Accessories Editor.”
