Richardson, Minors Win Butterfield Scholarships
The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited has awarded $50,000 in scholarships to two young Bermudians to assist them with their overseas educational expenses for the 2013/2014 academic year.
Akeila Richardson, the recipient of the Sir Harry D. Butterfield Scholarship, and Kevin Minors, the recipient of the Sir A. Dudley Spurling Postgraduate Scholarship, will each receive $25,000 per year for up to four years.
Butterfield’s Scholarship Committee Chairman, Lee Simmons, said “Butterfield continues to be committed to the development of Bermuda’s young people. Through the Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate and Sir A. Dudley Spurling Postgraduate scholarships, we’ve helped numerous students rise to their potential and inspire success in others.”
Butterfield’s 2013 Sir A. Dudley Spurling Postgraduate Scholar Kevin Minors, recently graduated from Oxford University [England] in 2013 with a Bachelors in Mathematics. In the Fall, Kevin will return to Oxford University where he will pursue a Master of Mathematics degree.
Kevin, a Warwick Academy graduate, was the Head Boy and also the first student to receive more than 40 points in the International Baccalaureate programme and the first to receive a level 7, the highest possible level, in Mathematics. Kevin was the first student to attend Oxford University as an undergraduate from a Bermudian secondary school in over 10 years.
He recently raised over $6,000 for Childreach International, a charity that supports education, health care and human rights for children in the developing world. To raise funds for the charity, Kevin will be participating in a two-week cycling expedition in India this summer.
Upon receiving his Masters degree, Kevin intends to obtain a Doctorate in Mathematics and then return to Bermuda to work as actuary with a possibility of becoming a Maths teacher.
The 2013 Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate Scholar, Akeila Richardson, recently completed her first year of undergraduate studies at Kennesaw State University where she was working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology.
Akeila was a member of KSU’s women’s track team, and also dedicated her free time to assisting The Diamond League, a foundation that organises baseball games for the physically and mentally challenged. In the Fall, she will attend the University of Tennessee where she will continue her Biology studies.
Prior to enrolling at KSU, Akeila attended CedarBridge Academy where she held the role of Deputy Head Girl and attained numerous accolades and honours. In 2012, she won the Sports Award, as well as the Overall award at the Outstanding Teen awards. Additionally, she was named Miss AME Youth of the year and awarded the Denton Hurdle Memorial Award.
Upon completion of her undergraduate degree, Akeila would like to enter medical school and study either pediatrics or oncology.
