“We are privileged to have this opportunity to support an athlete who has displayed extraordinary talent and skill in the sport of swimming, says Wayne Caines, CEO of Digicel Bermuda. “Often, we look abroad for sources of inspiration. It’s refreshing to be inspired by a young Bermudian focused on growth and success in a sport that offers both personal advancement as well as promotes Bermuda’s mark in the sport internationally.”

Burch started competing with Sharks Swim Club in Bermuda, then the Peddie School in New Jersey and his Springfield College in Massachusetts. He currently swims for Swim MAC in North Carolina, where his training requirements demand anywhere from 30 to 40 kilometres of swimming per week and approximately 6 hours of dry land training in a gym facility.

“Olympian Roy-Allan Burch defines dedication. This is a young man who moved to North Carolina to develop his swimming career and trains hard in pursuit of his dream, yet still finds time to work with young swimmers. We are happy to give him this push and look forward to sharing in his success at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio,” adds Shane Mora, Marketing Director of Digicel Bermuda.

Digicel Bermuda hosted a small gathering at the National Aquatics Centre to celebrate this special announcement. Local dignitaries including  Minister of Community, Culture & Sports Wayne Scott, Burch’s family, and members of BASA and the Bermuda Olympic Association were  in attendance.

Roy Alan Burch is an awesome man and a great athlete. I grew up with him in Somerset. All of us in his old neighborhood feel pride and a sense of accomplishment…

I was a good swimmer, got caught up, wasted my talent, now I can only live my dream through Roy.

I follow all of Roy’s races. I feel as if I am in the pool with him when he swims.

I am a cellone customer, tomorrow I will switch over and become a Digicel customer… This sponsorship has really touched me.
