Digicel To Introduce Lower Roaming Charges

August 13, 2013

Digicel Bermuda, along with other Digicel markets, will eliminate roaming charges in Digicel’s Caribbean networks while also introducing what they said was the “lowest rates ever for SMS, voice and data roaming” in the United States.

The new low rate roaming to the United States will be available for a monthly fee to Digicel Bermuda customers beginning October 1st.

Digicel Bermuda CEO Wayne Caines said, “At Digicel, we want to completely change customers’ views of roaming. We are working hard to allow customers to use their phones while roaming without fears of high charges when they return home. This initiative from Digicel means Bermudians travelling to other Digicel networks or the US will be able to use their phones just as conveniently and affordably as they do at home.”

Digicel Bermuda Sales Director, Shane McDonnell adds, “Our clients are always looking for ways to keep their costs low. Whether travelling for business or leisure, our new lower rates will provide further peace of mind when roaming on overseas networks. We already have more roaming partners than any other network in Bermuda and this innovation will further set us apart as the cellular provider of choice.”

More details about Digicel Bermuda’s new roaming rates will be announced in the future.

not a bad thing at all…will be watching to see what happens.

The amount of times I am in the US I can use with saving a buck or two

I wonder how Digicel will ‘reduce’ or charge a roaming fee with US cell carriers. The US carriers are amongst the greediest when it comes to roaming charges. Bermuda companies are just as greedy in that they wont tell you what you are paying per minute to roam and they also charge for turning the cell phone on (dont constantly turn it on and off) while away. The shocker is the $1000 bill you get then next month after your one week vacation.

Ahhh.. so they are not really eliminating roaming, they are just spreading it over yiur monthly bill… I guess deoending how often you roam it may be a savings. .. whatch iut for that 3 year contract! !

    Bla,bla,bla…who cares?
We all turn off our locked Digi sell phones when we travel.
By the way Cellone already have the lowest roaming rates to the USA and Canada.

Digicel’s rates beat CellOne every time- take it from me!! HellOne dodnt have any other networks in Caribbean so they can’t provide value like Digicel do. Everyone at CellOne should join Digicel.

I love seeing CellOne and Digicel staff post as if they are being objective. I like to do the math myself. If Digicel’s new roaming deal is a good one, then I’ll switch. Having to take out my CellOne SIM when I travel to the US is a pain because I do need to get local calls and texts. I never turned on data. Got burned with a $2K bill once. Never again.

But like someone said, you can’t roam with CellOne in the Caribbean. So I’ll give Digicel a +1 for that. If I can go on a cruise and roam on a Digicel market for free or super low cost, then that would be great.

It’s nice to see the telecomm space in Bermuda change so rapidly. We have been stuck in these monopolies for too long. Now if someone can just do something about BTC and Cablevision, that would be great. Belco seems to be the only untouchable entity in Bermuda.
