  3. Family Man says:

Not surprising. People volunteer to go to our prison here.

Your own bed, hot shower, three meals a day and you don’t have to cook or do the dishes, library, gym, exercise yard, all medical and dentist needs taken care of, no charge. Free education, free laundry service although admittedly, not much of a selection for your wardrobe.

For some of Bermuda’s elderly, its not such a bad alternative.

Family Man, you got a point there bie’ Just ask “Scar Fox” and a few others that seem to return to prison within a year of being released.Yes sire’ as you’d mentioned, “people volunteer to go to prison here”.

well ya….stop lockin guys up for ipods and hings might change!

  6. Not Suprised says:

With the judges/police officer who seem like they are always on their period, asinine laws being passed (I.e. making it illegal to ride with an I-pod) and antiquated laws that need to be off the books (I.e. conscription) I’m surprised we aren’t ranked #2 as quick as Bermuda is to lock people up for nothing.

what is value of housing 1 prisoner per year…..

  10. Legal Eagle says:

Redeploy the HIGH financial combined cost of Courts/DPP/police/prisons to finance: 1)breaking up ‘gangs’ 2)provide work for our chronically underemployed youth—- 3)better police senior schools with retired Police Officers so joining a gang isn’t a matter of social survival- 4)make prisoners ‘work’-on community (cost) projects if necessary-to offset their prison costs 5)restrict prison sentences to serious crimes of violence-or as a ‘last’resort AND-6) repeal prison sentences for ‘civil crimes’ e.g. ‘debtor’s prison’! Just a start!!

  11. Victor says:

Interesting that so many small island countries make the list – any guesses as to why?

  12. only in Bermuda says:

Ok so here’s the deal, cut back and serve them twice a day and wash their clothes 3times per week. Government’s books would be back in balance within 3 years. Putting them out to work is not the answer in Bermuda unfortunately due to higher officer risk and the need to employ additional staff to cover the risk on the outside.
Save the money and take away their luxuries.
