Pink Beach To Close On Aug 31, Reopen In 2014
Pink Beach — which currently has 42 employees — will close on August 31st and all staff will receive full redundancy.
It is scheduled to reopen in May 2014 as a 95 room five star Capella Resort and will employ approximately 215 people, Government said this morning.
A Government spokesperson said, “In accordance with Hotel Concessions Act 2000, Government engaged in the same process with regard to hotel concessions as it does with every other project of this nature. In this instance the application for the Hotel Concession Order was submitted by P.B. C. Holdings Limited.
“P.B.C. Holdings Limited is a subsidiary of Stoneleigh Capital LLC and Mr. Frank Palmer is the Managing Director. Stoneleigh is partnering with the Capella Hotel Group to undertake extensive renovations during this winter and spring 2014 to create a 95 room five star Capella Resort.
“The reopen date is scheduled for May, 2014. All staff were formally notified at the end of July that the hotel will be closed effective August 31, 2013 and all staff will receive full redundancy. Pink Beach currently has 42 employees and it is envisioned the fully completed and operational Capella Resort will employ approximately 215 individuals.”
so the are old staff going to get their jobs back when it re opens or can we expect a plane load or more of EXPATS arriving on the Island to take jobs away from Bermudians.
why would an employer go to the trouble and expense of bringing in an expat if they have a competent, reliable, Bermudian employee who is happy to take on the roll?
campervan,
you completely missed the ball!
where have you been for the last 20 years in Egypt cruising de nile
Evidently you didn’t read the words “competent” or “reliable”.
as it relates to local applicants biased subjective conditions has been a part of the employer’s selection process for the last 20 years
why should these applicants’ expectation be any different
oh yeah no more term limits
Many employers hire foreigners over Bermudians. In addition to paying them higher wages they also give them housing allowances, Paid trips back to their home country, club memberships, and pay for their children’s private school fees.
Don’t get me wrong, we do require some foreign labor here, but at one point do we make sure that our Bermudians are given the same opportunities.
Nobody blaming de PLP yet? SURPRISED . LMAO
A hotel is being renovated and expanded, and will soon employ a couple of hundred people. The only surprise is that the PLP isn’t trying to take credit for it.
No one has to….I could throw a rock in any direction and hit something the plp f#@ked up. There’s no shortage of reminders.
the expat arrive because the company’s know they can’t depend on locals .. Who needs weekends off and dont show up to work when its raining .. haha no wonder you have expats .. without them there will be no hospitality or tourism business in Bermuda .. You guys just need someone to blame .. Can’t work and pointing fingers on others …
Sure it will!
I find it highly unlikely that “extensive renovations” will be completed as soon as May 2014.
i concur. maybe they are just putting in new furniture, tvs, carpet and some paint/wallpaper.
More Bermudians out of work !!Meanwhile there are cleaning companys out there that employe 80 to 90 percent of there workers from other countries!!wake up immagration department!!YES we may need outside people sometimes to fill the void. But Bermudians should always be first, providing they have the will and experience to fill the job..
So Stewie, you want the clean the toilets in my office on Friday nights. Let me know and I’ll hook you up with the Facilities Manager. Tell you what, you start this Friday.
@Ben Dover, no problem i have been doing that type of work for the last 20 years and know what it takes, and now employe 10 night time workers that are 100 percent Bermudian??But your toilets must be full of crept like, your comment if you only have them cleaned on friday night???
and while taking home $17 an hour?? i know plenty of bermudians that wold LOVEEE that type of work.. NOT!
I KNOW lots of Bermudians that would work for $17 an hour because right now they have not got JACK per hour!….smuck!
That would work? Or that would show up to collect a paycheck?
^^ And that won’t steal sh*t?
Seriously, any employer with any common sense hires as many hard-working, punctual, friendly, literate, and honest local workers as he can find. Importing labour is not exactly easy, quick, or cheap. (P.S. I’m not claiming all employers have common sense.)
@ Come Correct
No one has to….I could throw a rock in any direction and hit something the plp f#@ked up. There’s no shortage of reminders.
Were is the evidence to support this.
Why bother when you and I know full well you wont see what you don’t want to. I guess the worldwide recession built those condos on south shore, you know the ones with the rust stains dripping down the walls. I guess they’re expensive to maintain when you only sell one. I’d explain to you how those condos screwed basically every Bermudian, except the ones who have money and multiple houses, but simple economics and housing markets seem like a foreign concept to you.
