Taylor Gorham Wins BZS/ Steinhoff Scholarship

Environmental sciences student Taylor Gorham has been named the recipient of the 2013 Steinhoff/Bermuda Zoological Society [BZS] scholarship.

The scholarship, established by former BZS president Robert Steinhoff, provides educational opportunities for Bermudian students studying environmental sciences at accredited institutions. To be considered, applicants must be in the final two years of a Bachelor’s degree, or working towards a Masters or Doctorate degree in their chosen field. Since its launch its inception in 2009, more than $50,000 has been awarded to deserving students.

“The main goal of the Bermuda Zoological/Steinhoff scholarship is to encourage the next generation of stewards for our environment. I congratulate Taylor Gorham on being awarded the scholarship for 2013/2014. She is a very capable person and is committed to the sustainability of our environment,” said Mr. Steinhoff.

Taylor Gorhamhas been awarded the Steinhoff Scholarship for $7,000 for one year as she commences her MSc in Conservation Sciences at the Imperial College in London.

“My goal as a conservation scientist is to protect nature for the long term benefit of Bermuda and Bermudians,” Ms. Gorham explained. “It’s a real honour. Just being able to say I was a scholarship winner will have a huge benefit to my career, and it has really boosted my confidence.”

Taylor began volunteering for BZS at the age of 12, and has also served as counselor for Aqua Camps and worked in the North Rock Tank. She has also worked with the Bermuda Turtle Project and as a research intern for BREAM for two summers. She obtained her BSc in Biology from McGill University.

According to BAMZ Principal Curator Ian Walker, “The BZS and BAMZ is incredibly pleased to be able to participate in this scholarship to Taylor Gorham. We greatly appreciate Mr. Robert Steinhoff’s contribution without which this scholarship would not have been possible. We wish Taylor great success in her upcoming academic year.”
