PLP: “Throne Speech Lacking In Substance”
The Progressive Labour Party today [Nov 8] dismissed the Throne Speech as “lacking in substance.”
Shadow Finance Minister David Burt said, “Bermudians looking for hope on jobs from the OBA have been sorely disappointed. Bermudians need jobs and there was nothing new in this speech to address the ongoing jobs crisis that is affecting Bermudians.
“While we support efforts to lower the cost of living, relief is needed across the board in energy and food at the wholesale and retail level; not just one day of the week in some supermarkets. The lack of substance for Bermudians contained in the speech is both shocking and disappointing”
PLP Senate Leader Diallo Rabain remarked, “The OBA seem overwhelmed and unable to put together a plan to get Bermudians back to work. From the repetition of promises they didn’t keep last year, to the lack of a plan on jobs, Bermudians have been severely let down by the OBA.”
PLP Senator Marc Daniels concluded,”Perhaps while we appreciate our problems will not be resolved overnight the Throne Speech did little to invoke confidence as to the alleged 5 year plan to her Bermuda back on track. A vision is required which our Part Leader will present next week while providing leadership and hope to those that surely need it”

This Throne Speech did not meet the Mark, it lacked an aggressive approach to get folks back to work, and to assist those folks whom are struggling.
It failed to provided another leg to our economy.
ONE of the highest cost factors in Bermuda is ENERGY/ELECTRICITY…This was lacking a big way….While we support efforts to lower the cost of living, relief is needed across the board in energy and food at the wholesale and retail level; not just one day of the week in some supermarkets. This will ease up those folks of privilege, but folks without much, this is far from assisting them.

It Mis-lead the people of Bermuda once again… Giving away votes to PRC holders to win votes for the next election.
The small items were to provide a feel good feeling only, while nothing of substance was provided. OBAubp knows some folks will fall for this short-fall in the Throne Speech, as many of their fans seldom evaluate what they put out in a careful fashion anyways.
I was hoping that they would have provided a more effective Throne Speech, but I am somehow disappointed, despite my prayers for CHANGE and Transparency and Inclusiveness as promised on my door steps.
YES, they sure got the attention of all the OBAubp diehard, blindfaithful followers, as you all are taking out time in your busy schedule to read, digest it, and write a silly backward defense… REALLY….oh they nailed it…. got all the diehards writing and fighting back…. When the PLP says the throne speech “lacked substance” what they mean is that we had a whole speech without quoting Churchill, Ghandi, Mother Theresa and Martin Luther King.
Yes I remember a certain Burt who tried to pass off part of someone elses speech as that of the PLP. Was caught out by the media. Sorta like using rum logos……. At least we won’t have to endure the flowery waffle and bobble heading.
Burt is always “shocked”…As to the PLP, just watch as the OBA turn things around as they continue to restore confidence in Bermuda. The PLP proved without a shadow of a doubt that they hadn’t a clue how to recover from the position they found themselves in. The big difference is that I can see Bob Richards and others actually display the confidence that we have the solutions to get ourselves back on track. This was something that was very much missing from the former Government in their last few years in power. So for the PLP to come out taking about lack of substance in this year’s Throne Speech is pathetic but in politics predictable.
Burt can sell his swizzle seven days a week now.
I too would love to see change, but the reality is this Throne Speech fell short of that. This is not because of the PLP or Burt, the OBAUbp are in the driver’s seat, and yet they failed. I was hoping the Throne Speech would shine, as I am concern about folks whom are suffering big time out there, but this did little except 10% at the store to assist them. Small business were also let out in the cold. Seems like it was more about PRC and non-Bermudians getting status. Also the lack of collaboration by the OBAupb in the House today as preached by this government was merely hypocritical call.

The Throne Speech I read must be a different one from the one David Burt heard. There were more than a dozen specific legislative changes that WILL be made… hard to have much more substance than that when you’re laying out a legislative agenda.
Are the PLP criticizing the OBA for being too slow to fix the mess that the PLP caused by ignoring the OBA in the first place?
It takes a real piece of work to crash their car, and then tell the mechanic who told them to slow down in the first place, that they’re not fixing the car fast enough.
a press release from the opposition immediately after the throne speech shows their intentions… its easy to point fingers and try to deflect the damage the PLP created at the OBA… next time, take some time and provide constructive criticism instead your parties usual rhetoric.

It is really hard sometimes to respect a person whose public statements tend to reveal they are either lacking in integrity or ignorant. Sure, elected officials deserve a modicum of respect (after all, they carry the majority of their constituents’ support), but it is up to them to carry on earning that respect.
I will first say that I am by no means enamoured with the OBA Government. They have made some mistakes, but thankfully those mistakes haven’t (as yet) done any lasting damage to the Island.
That said, I have found that the Opposition’s comments of late have been petulant, ill thought out and tending toward misleading the public. Granted, that’s probably an improvement from when they were the Government, but the old chestnut of “the speech lacked substance” is hilarious coming from this Opposition. Bermudians have been forced to endure cliched platitudes, management-speak and too-often repeated refrains of “testicular fortitude” prior to the last election. In this speech, I heard focused language, specific initiatives and most of all: a plan.
I think it’s right on the nose to say that this Opposition is more concerned with sound bytes and point scoring than actually developing sound policies in cooperation with the Government.
The OBAubp are not serious about CHANGE< only change that impacts a certain sector of our society. If one has listen to the debate and behaviors displayed by the OBAubp in the house of Assembly, this will tell the real story.
The level behaviors displayed by the OBAubp MPs in the house tells one they are not serious about real change, nor are they willing to live by the buzz words that they preached pre-election. One only needs to see the disrespectful behavior displayed there, as well as their lack of Cooperation and Collaboration displayed in the house of Assembly. Even today was a great example on display for all to hear as well as see. It merely a political game of power for them. Change was the buzz word to fool people they were different. But the real goal was power. OBAubp have fooled some but not all. Only the blind followers believe this.

Having said that, I think there’s a third question missing from your list- Are the PLP (as opposition) trying to get the country back on track? Answer- Unclear.
The political sniping, such as Burt’s characterization very shortly after the Throne Speech, confirms to me that while many want to work together to repair the damage, others are simply looking to score political points.
So I’m afraid I disagree with your penultimate comment. Many of the Island’s politicians deserve a level of respect. Others do not. And those others have earned disrespect through shallow, unconstructive criticism and a failure to work towards a better Bermuda.
In those cases, the disdain, which spills onto the Party, has been well-earned.

The PLP was famous for passing poorly thought out legislation only to have to ammend it, repeal it or make us all live with it. I’m glad the OBA will take proper care with legislation.

I really could care less who came up with the good ideas, what I care about is who the heck actually implements them.
Let’s face it, a lot of us have had ideas at different points in our lives, only to see someone else come up with the same idea and benefit greatly from it. In no way would be have any right to demand benefit from those who did the work, simply because we had the same idea.

I think you forgot the bit of history that says that Bermuda had one of the highest standards of living in the WORLD and that everyone that wanted to work had a job or two or even three. Do you think the UBP had anything remotely to do with that fact? I think if you asked most people if they would prefer our current state of financial despair or that big surplus you mention and the vast majority would grab the big surplus right away.
