20 Year Old Admits Riding ‘Hot Wired’ Motorcycle

January 28, 2014

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Jan 28] a 20 year old man was granted $2000 bail after he admitted riding a stolen motorcycle.

Christopher Burgess had been stopped by Police in February 2013 in Hamilton Parish. At the time he was riding a motorcycle that the owner had reported as having been stolen in June 2012.

The Court heard that when Burgess was stopped, the cycle was found to be ‘hot-wired’. Police investigation through TCD showed that the cycle had also been equipped with a changed licence plate.

After his arrest, Burgess told Police that he had borrowed the cycle from an acquaintance named ‘Cal’ and that he had no idea that the bike was stolen.

Burgess read out a statement saying he had borrowed the bike from an acquaintance, and also told the Magistrate that he was intending to go to school in Atlanta to become a mechanic, and hoped that he would not be prevented from doing so.

Answering the Senior Magistrate’s questions, Burgess agreed that he had borrowed the bike from someone and that he also saw and knew that the bike was ‘hot-wired’ at the time. The Senior Magistrate asked “You didn’t question why the bike was ‘hot-wired’?”

The Magistrate explained that because neither police investigations nor actions by Burgess had produced a bike lender who was identified as the ‘Cal’ in question, that Burgess was left to face the two charges.

Senior Magistrate Archie Warner ordered a Social Inquiry Report, set sentencing for March, and granted Burgess $2,000 bail.
