Results: Day #2 Invitational Race Week 2014

May 5, 2014

The 2014 Bermuda International Invitational Race Week continued in the Great Sound this weekend.

Alpha Report:
The Etchells fleet entered day 2 of their 4-day regatta and the top three spots are still quite close. After the 3 races, John Hele’s Renegade has pulled out in front and currently stands on 10 points. Renegade came out of the start all guns blazing and had three bullets.

Only 3 points behind, on 13 points is perennial BIIRW favourite, Tim Patton in Thrash. GBR’s Jason Owen has dropped to third place in Pippa but stands close to the top spot on 16 points. Martin Vezina, sailing in Raven, sailed a man short when one of his crew was injured on the way to the Club [he's doing fine, but a bit sore]. Vezina improved on his fourth place finishes by picking up a second and third. He ends the day on 21 points.

The graceful ladies were out with the International One Design Fleet [IOD] taking to the water. There are 13 teams representing 9 of the 12 IOD fleets around the world, plus visiting crews from Royal Thames Yacht Club and the Daring Fleet in Cowes, UK.

The IODs rotate boats every day which keeps skippers and crews on their toes. After three races, Peter Wickwire from Chester, NS, Canada currently stand 1st with 9 points, closely followed by J. P. Roed of Norway [14 points]. Second to Eighth positions are very close with several teams standing at 15, 17 and 19 points. Bermuda 1, Patrick Cooper is in 6th and Bermuda 2, Martin Siese is 9th.

Bravo Report:
Bravo competitors had a tougher time contending with the wind and squalls with the Comet Class Bermuda International Invitational Race Week choosing to stay ashore. It looks like the Comet results will stand with results from Saturday which sees Rockal Evans and Christine Barnard currently on top of the podium. Stevie Dickinson and Pat Young are currently second and youngster Cece Wollmann and crew Peter Dill are third.

Cam Pimental finished the first day of Laser racing in fine form – he has 3 points, winning all three races today. Not far back, on 7 points is Rajae Woods. Multiple BIIRW winner, Malcolm Smith, is third with 13 points. Three is still a lot of racing left for the Laser fleet which concludes racing on Thursday. The youth Lasers went back out in the wind and young Benn Smith  seems to have cinched the inaugural Youth title on 9 points. Thomas Penruddocke and George Buckley are on 14 and 17 points respectively.

Racing continues Monday for the Lasers, Etchells and IODs.
