A spokesperson said, “Bermuda Commercial Bank is thrilled to award $5,000 towards a student wishing to pursue educational advancement at Bermuda College in the field of Information Technology.

“One of the requirements of the scholarship is that the student takes the pledge to ‘Pay It Forward’ within the community by identifying a general or specific plan to volunteer at a local charity or to serve as an academic tutor.

“A minimum of 14 hours or 1 hour per week is required and students are required to register with Volunteer Action [a Registered Student Organisation at Bermuda College] in order to track their time. The Bank’s philosophy on offering scholarships to students is founded on more than just giving dollars.

Peter Horton, the Bank’s CEO stated, “We want students in the community to truly understand the value of ‘paying it forward’ and giving back to our island home.

“Our community relies on the younger generations to communicate positive messages and actions across the island and we hope this programme encourages them to do so.”
