Live Blog: PLP March On Government House
[Updated] People are presently gathering at Government House as they prepare to take part in the Progressive Labour Party’s march to protest the Governor’s decision over the Commission of Inquiry.
Background
On July 4th the House of Assembly passed a Motion which proposed the Governor appoint a Commission of Inquiry into certain historic land transactions
Opposition MP Walton Brown brought the Motion which read, “That this Honourable House take note of the historic losses in Bermuda of citizens’ property through theft of property, dis-possession of property and adverse possession claims; and be it resolved that this Honourable House calls on His Excellency the Governor to establish a Commission of Inquiry into all such known claims and to determine, where possible, the viability of any such claims and make recommendations for any victims of wrongful action to receive compensation and justice.”
However, Governor George Fergusson issued a statement saying the debate “raised serious concerns” but “they are not clear enough or urgent enough to justify a Commission of the type proposed.”
Following that, the PLP said the Governor “made a mockery of Parliament and disrespected the Bermudian people” and said they will march on Government House and call for the “immediate recall of the Governor.”

There is some serious dirt in this country and we keep covering it up. It’s like if you were sweeping your living room and just swept all the dirt under a big area rug in the middle of the room while the rest of the room was kept clean. You’d invite guests to your house and say “Look at our beautiful home” and pray they didn’t see the massive mound of dirt accumulated under the rug…but guess what? They may not notice at first but eventually they will and start to say to themselves what a messy housekeeper you truly are.
THAT is Bermuda…we try and portray ourselves as this beautiful, perfect country while a big pile of dirt is there nicely hidden up. Like one’s home, the day’s going to come when someone yanks away that rug for all to see the dirt you’ve been hiding…that is what’s going to happen in this country-it will eventually be exposed for ALL to see!!!
And nothing I saw in a decade and a half of PLP “Government” told me that anything changed. In fact it got worse, not just in education, but Bermuda got worse, much worse.
And all I saw today was Marc Bean pulling a load of puppets for the purposes of the PLP, not democracy, and that stinks.
So pull the rug away tonight Seer and what you got? It isn’t for the better, and it sure as hell has nothing to do with land grab.
It’s vote grab, vote bullying, which is all Marc Bean is.
And no one likes a bully.
So the PLP messed up a motion, not getting terms of a commission correct. They then move the goalposts and cry be the masters of our own domain.
Do you want a commission, because it sounds like you forgot about it.
PLP if you want to be the masters of your own domain, then nothing is stopping you from financing a commission. All those people coulld put some cash in and you can refine the terms and have a commission.
This whole march was PLP base trying to power grab.
Why are they so desperate, what are they trying to hide?
Why was the march for democracy turned into a dictatorship rally?

The 300 in donations made before the 2012 election, we all want to know about, it wasn’t the public purse.
Term limits had a negative affect on our economy, so was good to remove them.
If people were not paid a fair price (black and white) for their land for the base and Mid Ocean, then show me evidence. We have been offered none. If it can be proven, then there can be grounds for making up the difference to fair value and adjusting it for inflation. To todays $value.
The march was nonsens. There were people there for so many different reasons protesting, when it was suppossed to be a march for democracy regarding the commission.
The PLP is so fragmented, they don’t know what they are marching for.

The news has reported that there was a crowd of about 2,000 people so maybe YOU are the one who needs to look it up.
To be honest I don’t think the pictures are a fair representation of the true numbers. Especially since you can see people still coming around the corner. The thing is if you have 2000 people, that’s still less than 5% of the population. It is never a bad thing to see people standing up for what they believe, but how many actually believe this is the most pressing issue of the day (considering 14 years, financial state, TP SDO and the PLP stance), how many believe this is the right way to do this? Although I believe this should be thoroughly looked into, I think stabalizing our economy so that those of us living now can have a better life and provide better for the future generations, I think that repairing our relation with tourism and IB is more important at the moment. I truly believe this just hasn’t been done the right way. Using your head will always prevail against force and ignorance.

I don’t really think it matters how many people are there as long as someone is standing up for what they believe. I am very proud of every single person that was out there today and I do hope they will continue to march until they get some truth to the land problem in Bermuda.

No-one should be surprised by the amount of people that showed up; remember the P.L.P. loss the election by a few votes…So personally, I’m not a bit shocked seeing so many show up to protest a cause that they will nor can win…
I agree, there is a genuine issue here that at some point will need a thorough look at. However, I do not recognize now as being the time, and I believe that the PLP’s methods and motives for pushing this issue out are entirely disingenuous. They are play politricks with a very sensitive subject to which there will ultimately be no winners. We have far too many and much more serious issues that needs to be addressed right now, and it is slap in the face to our children and to the victims of these past crimes, that PLP would us this to distract from these issues. The 2 main reasons for this distraction is that it was many of their short sighted policies and poorly comprised legislations that have contributed to these issues, and secondly, should the OBA succeed in making progress to addressing and fixing these issues before the next election, it will be harder for the PLP to get themselves back to the power they crave. If they were truly genuine about their stance, they would have tackled it when they were in power, particularly when the economy could have enabled it. Instead on multiple occasions they dismissed it.
The governor was completely correct in how he handled the motion, as he is unable to act on it at this time due in particular as to how this commission is to be funded. It is not within his power to do that, but solely within our legislature’s. Now it back on the PLP’s head to to provide the proper requirements for the motion, and it would be the responsible thing of the PLP to wait until the more immediate concerns to our society can be resolved.

Thank you for a reasoned, intelligent view of the land acquisitions issue. Unfortunately, there will no doubt be droves of people who will not read it through and, if they do, most won’t understand it. The land issues, of which Tuckers Town is one, are very complex and the documentation of how lands were acquired were often spotty if not missing altogether. It is unfortunate that the PLP is so focused on stirring up trouble in a bid to regain power, that their efforts will do little more than bring more hardship to the Island and its people. They are playing a very dangerous game!!
I feel very sorry for these Bermudians who have no idea how they are being used and manipulated by the PLP MPs. If PLP really cared they would have dealt with all these land issues during their 14 years in charge. Instead all PLP did was oversee Bermuda’s largest economic decline in a hundred years. This inquiry looks like a great job for the former Ombudsman and the first thing to look into is the PLP’s Tuckers Point SDO and work backwards from there…

Irony, is that they are calling on the Governor to be recalled for doing his job thoroughly and correctly, when it was Mr. W Brown who didn’t do his correctly and drafted an insufficient motion for the issue. Perhaps if he had drafted the motion correctly they would have gotten the results they wanted… or perhaps they did get the results they wanted, after all, they thwarted this justice multiple times during their governing.

I for one, what business brought back to this island so that it can once again create jobs and opportunities, that is my will. These past injustices are not going anywhere, so this issue can wait until we are back on our feet and direct a thought out and properly written motion/legislation to address it with the attention it commands. Yes many of our parents and Grands never got an adequate education what with families needing the older children to be earning for the house hold. My father was one of 11 (6th) and he was pulled from school to help the family as did many other children of that era, especially the boys.
Having said that your comment about Lynching is reaching and diminishes your argument.

I was educated under the UBP also. I’m black, male and have a college degree. In this day and age, why are we now having uneducated people coming about out of the PLP reign of terror? The matters of spelling correctly or incorrectly and proper grammar or incorrect grammar are not the issues. They have a cause that they believe in, and are standing for it. As ‘Put pupils first’ says, the sarcasm is not necessary, and is in poor taste. This march appears to be peaceful, and standing for what you believe in while knowing you will be subject to ridicule is to be admired. There are probably many more who wish they had the courage to stand as these folks are doing.

Why only now an issue of national and historical importance for the PLP? If this is such a matter requiring a commission of inquiry, why didn’t the PLP deal with this whilst in power? Perhaps that would have gone against their approval of the SDO for the Tucker’s Point property that was critical at that the time?? Er no..there were two very distinct issues if I recall..one was the refusal to amend legislation to “allow for equal rights for homosexuals” and the second was DREB’s move to bring the Uighars (sp) to Bermuda. So, not really the same thing.
This is just an excuse for a political rally. What you forget, is that the PLP had a golden opportunity to right many wrongs, invest in our people, end discrimination (racial, sexual you name it) , look at past injustices…but the blew it. They were ill equipped for power, ran around like kids in a candy store and whipping up racial rhetoric because, deep down, that’s all they have. No ideas, no plan, no clue. Nothing. They blew it.

Actually the naysayers are correct. Plus the island need not be doomed if not for the contempt, deception, fabrication, and imagination of the PLP. This has been an exercise of distortion by the PLP base who are still enraged they were not reelected and will do anything to destroy any progress on the island just in hopes they can get back in. I think the vast majority on here care about the island. I happen to be a local, but if I was not then would I not have a right to free speech? Some people look at the world differently than me, and that does not make them wrong. If there are any Non-Bermudans giving opinions, then it is great to have different viewpoints.
Comments on either side of an argument sometimes cross the line, and can be seen as degrading. Sometimes people don’t even mean to do this, and it just comes out that way. Those that seem to be totally degrading, regardless of where they stand, tend not to represent the majority.

It is worth remembering that the last time folk marched on Government House was in 2001 when a band of of people of a different hue warned that single seat constituencies and “one man one vote; each vote of equal value” would be the end of Bermuda as we knew it and lead to dictatorship. They marched to Government House and Governor Masefield appeased them by organizing a public meeting at which they could vent about how evil Jennifer Smith was and how these constitutional changes had to be stopped by the British Government. I don’t recall any of these foul names and insults being hurled against them by those opposed to their protest. Funny, some people’s protest is just fine and other’s is “chaos, a rabble, angry and fruitless”. The optics of both crowds then and now tells the story. At least the British invited the 2001 crowd into the house. The 2014 crowd was kept at the gate. Welcome to Bermuda.

This issue is between the governor and the PLP.
There are many camps:
- Those that don’t want the governor to resign
- Those that think this is another move toward independence by PLP
- Those that think the PLP is going overboard in this case
- Those that simply don’t like the PLP, based on past experience

So the Governor wants to find out how to support all the claims? Well he can start with the Gibbons family. If you check into it, they own majority of the land in Tucker’s Town as well as through out the rest of the island. Yes they have their own stores, banks and other establishments but lets look back to the early 1900′s or even further and see what role their family has played. So Mr. Governor, you wanted someone who will pay for the claims, here is a good one. They are worth billions anyways so it shouldn’t hurt their pockets too much.

Why didn’t they explore this when they were in power? Simple answer is it would not have distracted from the issues that needed to be dealt with and they were in power so why bother. It really is inconsequential that the Governor is off the island on vacation in London, he has made us aware that he is reading the comments on the blog. And with keen interest so are other foreign interests.
What the march has highlighted is that this blog is being used as a OBA counter-protest. Yes, OBA supporters are protesting against the march – freedom of expression! But whether it is a few under many aliases or a majority of OBA supporters protesting – it is unclear.
Unfortunately, your counter-protest has descended into ridicule, spiked with malicious remarks and spun completely off point. This is about historic social injustices, not spelling mistakes on signs. It’s about seeking a Commission of Inquiry to investigate historic land grabs, not about spinning and gloating PLP supporters into turning it into an issue of race.
If truth must be told the PLP dropped the ball on this issue (land grabs) when they were in power and I for one was seething with anger, and I have written about it on previous blogs. But why now for the PLP can only be answered by the PLP, and I for one, am grateful that they are taking this issue very seriously. And please do not attempt to open the door to your conspiracy theories, OBA supporters, there are enough political theories in Bermuda to fill the chronicles of Roswell!
If not now, when? No time will ever be the ‘right time’ to begin a Commission of Inquiry as it stands juxtaposition against the America’s Cup. Link? They both require funding from the Consolidated Fund. And, in my mind, they both having the equal and unreserved right to be given the full support of all Bermudians, irrespective of race, ethnicity and/or financial worth. FIX public education system NOW! We cannot fix Bermuda without all children getting an equal education! Close all the public schools, open more private schools, those that can’t pay can apply for scholarships and government grants based on earnings funded by international businesses. All children in Bermuda should be afforded the same education and high standards, which includes strict discipline and tolerance for racial differences and economic inequality. There is no reason all children should not be brought up to the same education standards. If we carry on with this lack of education and breeding of ignorance, the island will not survive!

I wonder what would be said by the PLP, People’s Campaign, CURB etc if a Commission was eventually convened, cases examined and the final report recommended that various families’ estates had been wrongfully seized and that reparations were in order, however, all of the families involved were white Bermudians.
March 19th, 2011 – Junior Environment Minister David Burt told the Senate of Government’s sympathy for descendants of families who were forcibly removed from Tucker’s Town in the 1920s.
However Senator Burt argued it’s now Government’s job to look after the people of today meaning it needs to try to revitalise tourism with the Rosewood Tucker’s Point development.
Anti-racism group CURB had objected to the Special Development Order for the hotel’s expansion, pointing to the history of the site, where dozens of mainly black families were evicted more than 80 years ago in the interests of tourism development backed by Parliament.

and had to start over.
Basically any large golf course was once houses and farms.
The whole area between Fort Hamilton and the North Shore that was depopulated for military defense of Dockyard, as was a wide swatch around Fort Scaur
Morgans Point was islands owned by farmers; Dockyard too.
It is interesting how we only remember some of this…
