New Acute Wing Moves Closer To Completion

July 15, 2014

The new Acute Care Wing is nearing completion, with service commencement successfully achieved on June 12, 2014.

The wing will now remain in an “operating period” during which minor construction problems can be completed, with Paget Health Services [PHS] to commence their facilities management works and the Bermuda Hospitals Board [BHB] to commence orientation and training and assume responsibility for the security of the new wing.

A spokesperson said, “Inside the Acute Care Wing, the BHB is progressing with their staff training with regular tours throughout the week; this will be gradually increased as the wing approaches its September opening date. All floors are now generally complete, apart from the installation of final loose items of medical equipment and remaining minor deficiencies.”

“Works to the link are close to completion, with the ground floor and floor one open following completion of the interface works. The remaining connections at the basement and floors two, three, and four will be completed by July 23. This will allow BHB to test movement of patients, food, and laundry services between the existing facility and the new wing.

“The mechanical plant rooms continue to be the busiest areas on site, as final balancing of equipment controls integration is completed and final commissioning of systems is progressed.

“The outside of the building is now complete, with hard landscaping also nearing completion. The Healing Garden and remaining wearing course asphalt will be complete by July 23. Soft landscaping is generally complete apart from final planting to the Healing Garden. This work will also be complete by July 23.

“Final fixtures and fittings such as lighting, cameras, duress stations, and cameras are being installed. The site storage containers will all be removed by July 23. This will allow the soft landscaping to be completed and the new footpath from the Springfield parking to the Acute Care Wing, to open.”
