Videos: Athletes Return Home With Medals
The American Airlines flight from Miami was tonight [July 8] loaded with swimmers and track and field athletes, all returning from overseas competitions this past weekend.
The athletes were met at the LF Wade International Airport by Minister for Community, Culture and Sports Wayne Scott along with Junior Minister, Senator Alexis Swan.
Bermuda swimmers returned from the Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships [CISC] with over twenty medals in hand. Performances saw new CISC, Bermuda National and Age Group Records set as well as CAC and Canadian Championship Qualifying Standards met.
National coach Ben Smith said, “It was a spectacular performance by the team from the youngest that we had there getting Medals to our senior athletes that are preparing for major competitions.
“Everybody performed well with lots of personal best times, records and obviously the medals.”
Bermuda’s track and field team returned from the CAC Junior Championships in Morelia, Mexico with four medals and were also met by members of the Bermuda National Athletics Association including President Donna Watson.
Kyrah Scraders captured gold in the 800m clocking a time of 2:14.00 and then again in the 400m with a new personal best time of 55.85. Kyle Webb won bronze in the 100m and set a new Bermuda junior record clocking a time of 10.55, while Jah-Nhai Perinchief won a bronze in the High Jump.
The team included Sakari Famous, Azaire Smith, Kyrah Scraders, Jordan Bascome, Antonio Bailey, David Darrell, Jah-Nhai Perinchief, Kionje Somner, Kyle Webb, Bruce DeGrilla and Chas Smith along with the management team of Troy Douglas, Brian Wellman and Jean Ann Webb.
Bermuda National Athletics Association’s President Donna Watson also took the opportunity to announce that Kionje Somner has been selected to attend the Nanjing 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games. He will join Kyrah Scraders and Jah-Nhai Perinchief who have already qualified and will represent Bermuda in track and field at the games held August 16-28 2014 in Nanjing China.
