Imagine To Mark International Day Of Peace

September 16, 2014

downloadThe United Nations has designated Sunday September 21st as International Day of Peace and Imagine Bermuda is joining other local groups in highlighting its observance.

A spokesperson said, “The Day is geared to look at ‘Peace’ on all levels of the Human Family and given the very current Global Challenges – Iraq, Ukraine amongst others – that impact international stability, this observance is indeed timely.

“That said, recent events indicate that Bermuda isn’t ‘another world’. The unfortunate incident that occurred near Ord Road last week, demonstrates the need for closer collaboration on the part of all sectors, to strengthen the fabric of our society to foster Peace.

“As a part of the local observance, Imagine is collaborating with Bermuda Broadcasting Co. They will be broadcasting a live Global Interview, with Archbishop Desmond Tutu on FM 89 on Thursday, 18/9/14 from 2.00 – 2.45 pm [local time]

“We are encouraging residents to tune-in at that time. In addition, for those who have the flexibility, residents are invited to a Gathering at St. Paul AME on Court & Victoria Street to listen to the live broadcast – to hold a space for Peace. That Gathering will begin at 1.55 pm with an Opening Prayer by Canon Thomas Nisbett, followed by sitting together, reflecting on the thoughts being expressed – live- by Desmond Tutu.

“The significance of the venue is that St. Paul was the site where lunchtime Prayer Vigils were held during the very challenging times of the 1981 Labour Dispute. Those reflective times were a collaboration by Canon Nisbett, the late-Rev. Larry Lowe and others, and they proved to be one of the keys in ensuring that the Island was able to peacefully resolve that historic crisis.

“In addition to the offering by the Global Icon, Desmond Tutu, Imagine has also invited a number of local personalities to share their reflections on the theme “What Peace Means to Me”. Provided in two formats – some written and other video-taped – these reflections will be published by the local media with the view of fostering a community conversation on Peace.”
