October 26, 2014

[Updated with video] Bermuda’s Flora Duffy has just won the 2014 Xterra World Championship in Hawaii today [Oct 26], crossing the line in just under 2 hours, 48 minutes.

The off-road triathlon combines a 1.5-kilometer rough water swim, a 30.4-kilomete mountain bike and a 9.5-kilometer trail run, with some 800 athletes from 28 countries and 42 U.S. states taking part.

This win caps off a first class season from the two-time Olympian, who has been extremely dominant throughout this year’s XTERRA racing season, winning the  XTERRA Nationals in Utah, XTERRA Championship in South Africa, the XTERRA West Championship in Nevada, the XTERRA Asia-Pacific Championship in Australia and the XTERRA Southeast Championship in Alabama.

Update: Speaking after the race, Ms Duffy said, “I’ve dreamed of being a world champion since I was 8-years-old, so to make that dream a reality today is pretty special.

“Particularly coming from Bermuda; we don’t – I think I’m the first world champion – hence why I grabbed the flag and just had so much, I guess, Bermudian pride.

“It means a lot to me to do this from Bermuda, we’re a small little country and I love to represent them and put them on the map. So it’s a huge day for me.”
