Gymnastics: Boys Yellow Jackets Invitational
Five members of the Bermuda Gymnastics Association boy’s competitive team had a stellar showing at the Yellow Jackets Holiday Gymnastics Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts over this past weekend of December 13th+14th, 2014.
The meet was hosted at the Yellow Jackets Gymnastics facility, owned by Olympic medalist and Olympic coach Peter Kormann. Mr. Kormann traveled to Bermuda last year to run a clinic with the Bermuda team, and the gymnasts were looking forward to seeing him again and competing in his gym. It was also the first competition of the 2014-2015 season for the boys squad.
The following gymnasts traveled, along with Head Coach Duke Nelligan: Jacob Madeiros [Mt. St. Agnes], Thomas Gesick [Somersfield], Jordan Trimarchi [Saltus], Taj Lowery [Warwick Academy], and Max Blakeney [Saltus].
Jacob Madeiros started the weekend off with a flourish in the Level 4 session – winning Vaulting and placing 4th all-around. Next up were the Level 5s, where Thomas Gesick scored a 10.6 on Vaulting [6th] and earned 7th place all-around, and Jordan Trimarchi had his highest score on Vaulting [9.6] in his very first Level 5 competition.
Last up were the Level 6’s: Taj Lowery dominated the Vaulting event, winning with a 10.6, and Max Blakeney placed 4th on vault and also picked up a 7th place medal on floor.
“The over-all meet was great as the boys are showing the maturity and attention to detail needed for Island games this summer. Two first places and a total of thirteen medals! I am very proud of the them. I am also very proud of the work that Coach Magan Outerbridge has put into preparing the team”, remarked Coach Nelligan.
The boys will return to action at the end of January, when they travel to Springfield, Mass. for the Tim Daggett National Invitational, held at the Mass Mutual Center. The four athletes age 11 and up will then turn their sights towards being the first full squad to represent gymnastics in the Island Games this summer.
