Kawaley-Lathan Hopes To Join Up With People
Saltus Grammar School student Zachary Kawaley-Lathan hopes to take his education to the next level by joining global group Up With People, with the young man juggling his graduation with serving codfish breakfasts, popping popcorn, and delivering chocolate milk in the effort.
Zachary, 18, is working to raise enough money to join the group, a global education organization which aims to bring the world together through music and service.
“I want to go to UWP because I would like to make a positive difference in communities worldwide,” said Zachary.
“I realized how much I really enjoyed helping others, especially when I had an opportunity to help seniors and young people. I am excited to continue helping others around the world whilst learning about their unique cultures.”
All of the young man’s fundraising efforts thus far have been food-related, including serving a cod fish breakfast at the Matilda Smith Williams Seniors Residence.
Mrs Kawaley-Lathan added, “Zach had enough donations to take a plate for every resident and the staff who were working that morning.”
On top of that, on the night he graduated, he popped popcorn all night to deliver popcorn and chocolate milk to 250 children at Saltus Upper Primary.

The following week, Zachary delivered another milk and popcorn snack to the children at Saltus Lower Primary, and made his own donation to the children at ‘Tomorrow’s Voices’.
Zachary added, “I am both excited and nervous about the trip to Up With People, everyone has been so supportive of me going. I think the people to thank the most for my inspiration to go is my family because they have been there for me all the way.”
