Walter Roban: ‘Gun Violence Affects Each Of Us’
“Two alleged firearm incidents in less than 2 days is a matter of deep concern,” Shadow Public Safety Minister Walter Roban said, adding that the “issue of gun violence is not a political one, nor solely a police issue. Gun violence affects each of us.”
Mr Roban’s statement comes after the armed robbery at a St George’s bank on Tuesday afternoon, and the gunshots on St Monica’s Road last night.
“Two alleged firearm incidents in less than 2 days is a matter of deep concern. The PLP condemns this latest incident and encourages the public to assist the police however they can, with their investigation,” Mr Roban said.
“This issue of gun violence is not a political one, nor solely a police issue. Gun violence affects each of us, whether it is the fear it sends throughout the community or the reputational damage it does to our island as a tourism destination; we all are impacted and so we all have a role to play.
“With the worsening jobs crisis and many Bermudians struggling to make ends meet, we remain hopeful that crime will stay down, but each of us must work together to preserve law and good order.
“To our young men caught up in crime and violence, we must offer them a better path and they must make changes within themselves to get on that path and reenter society.
“To those living in fear and hopelessness, we encourage you to speak out and stand up to those who would seek to diminish the safety and security of our land. To the Bermuda Police Service, we offer our complete support and encouragement.
“Together we can restore the peace and tranquility of our home,” added Mr Roban.
And what did the PLP do to address these issues in their 14 years when most of this gave birth.
Nada.
Now praise for the Police.
Hipocrits (sp) the lot.
Shalom.
Both incidents actually happened – they are not ‘alleged’. Bullets were found in the St Monica’s case. As for the bank robbery, a real or imitation firearm was displayed. The culprit, if brought to court, will be tried for an armed robbery – fake or real.
Now, now, you know everything has to be politically correct in Bermuda. Don’t want to hurt any tender feelings. Just like a knife is never a knife. It is sugar coated & called a bladed article.
Probably uses the word ‘alleged’ to protect himself.
Roban, you couldn’t resist a political punt could you….are you sure you didn’t mean to say………
If we the PLP hadn’t created a mood of do what you want and don’t care about the consequences, then perhaps the gun violence would not have begun and escalated to crazy level. Thank you OBA for in most part reducing to these very infrequent incidents.
I like that in Cairo persons got life in prison or killing people at a football game.. and not aimed at a particular person.. these two yesterday get life.. but could be out in 25 yrs.. ( LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT PAROL ), for killing someone.. is what will reduce the guns, and if caught with a gun min of 25yrs in prison will do
I just want to say that I’m the original Onion and this guy is an impostor.
Public co-operation to help eradicate these ills in our society is absolutely necessary in cases of Crime related to drugs……guns……violence ….for money and crimes of desperation and frustration! It….is an epidemic affecting everybody.Bermuda has to come to grips collectively to combat these ills.. !We can not be divided along lines of race creed religion Politics or any other consideration. This is one time in our history that calls for a United Front to combat them.To avoid doing so …….spells disaster for our future.
@ Takbir Karriem Sharrieff: You are 100% correct. Now if only others can meet us half way? I am also fed-up with the “ignorance” taking place, and I will “roll-over” on anyone that I hear or know is doing such acts. They hurt everyone…
