Man Detained After Barricading Himself In House

[Updated with video. After a situation that began at around 1.00pm the police confirmed , at around 8.30pm, that a male has been detained under the Mental Health Act.]

The police are presently on scene in a residential neighborhood in Warwick as a man, with what the police termed a “bladed article”, has barricaded himself in a residence.

Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “Presently police are attending a report of a man who has barricaded himself in his residence with a bladed article. Police are in position around the dwelling and a police negotiator is on the scene.

“The Bermuda Police Service would like to apologize to the neighbors for the inconvenience, and we will update the public as information becomes available.”

Update 3.11pm: A police statement said, “At 1:25pm Police responded to a report of male in distress who has barricaded himself inside a private residence on Easedale Lane in Warwick. A police negotiator is presently on scene.

“We will keep you updated as situation is warranted. Police would like to apologize to area residents for any inconvenience caused as a result of this incident.”

Update 3.40pm: The situation is still ongoing. The road has been blocked off, and no vehicular traffic is being let through.

Update 4.28pm: Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “At about 1.25pm, police responded to a report of an incident that took place at Easedale Lane in Warwick. It appears that a man presently is barricaded inside his house; he has what appears to be a bladed article.

“Police have the area cordoned off with specific officers from our ERT Unit, and we have a police negotiator on scene. We will update the media as more information makes itself available.

“We do have trained negotiators within the Bermuda Police Service; at present, one is in place, and she’s working with the relevant governmental agencies and they are processing the scene and working with the individual as we speak.”

When asked if there was anyone else in the house, Mr. Caines said, “It does not appear that anyone else is in the house at this point.

“We’d like to thank the neighbours for their patience; the road, as we speak, has been cordoned off and no vehicular traffic is being let through. Again, we’re asking them for their patience as we process the scene.”

Update 5.24pm: The situation still appears to be ongoing.

Update 7.27pm: The situation remains the same, with the police still on scene.

Update 8.38pm: Police have confirmed that they have detained a male under the Mental Health Act, and said he is being transported to MAWI for assessment. The police also confirmed that there were no reported injuries, and also extended their thanks to members of the public for their patience.

Update 9.32pm: A police spokesperson said, “Around 1:25pm [Aug 31] Police responded to a report of male in distress who barricaded himself inside a private residence on Easedale Lane in Warwick.

“As a result of this incident, a 19 year old Warwick man, who was believed to be armed with a bladed article, was detained under the Mental Health Act and transported to the Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute for assessment. The operation was carried out successfully and without injury.

“The Bermuda Police Service would like to thank members of the public particularly those in the Easedale Lane/Ord Road Warwick area for their patience concerning this matter.
