Students Build America’s Cup Replica Models
Two Saltus Grammar School students have grand designs on the America’s Cup – building wooden replica models of the catamarans from scratch.
SGY2 students Aiden Young and Jamie Sayers have just completed the hulls of an AC45 and expect to complete the project this term when they’ve made the mast, sails and rigging all to scale.
According to Mike Hooper, the Design Technology Technician at Saltus, it is one of two America’s Cup related projects.

He said Design Technology Teacher Patrick Mahon is working on a graphic design project with S7 students. As part of the curriculum for Year 7, the students will create sail designs for model versions of the AC45s.
At the conclusion of this project, the designs will be judged by America’s Cup team members.
Saltus has recently welcomed students whose families are staying in Bermuda for the America’s Cup and Jon Beard, Deputy Head and Director of Advancement, said the event was having a marked impact on the school.
He added: “Everyone is very aware of the America’s Cup and very much looking forward to seeing the boats in action this month as well as in 2017. It is also proving to be an excellent teaching tool for the students.”
Excellent to see model boat builder Michael Hooper sharing his skills with the Saltus students. Well done all!
I made a model speed boat from bosal wood with no plans just all in my head when I was in school. Public school though.
Awesome!
