Video: Miss Bermuda’s ‘Beauty With A Purpose’

December 18, 2015

As she continues to compete in Miss World – recently placing in the top 13 in talent – Miss Bermuda Alyssa Rose is supporting Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy and its efforts to raise the quality of life of children on the island, with the Miss World organisation releasing the video as part of the pageant’s ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ segment, which encourages contestants to partake in a charitable program that enriches the lives of others.

In the video, Ms. Rose says, “Bermuda is a beautiful place. Beyond the physical features of the island, the people are the true treasures. Growing up as a child here was exciting – swimming at the beach, riding the waves, playing outside in the rays of the warm sun – but not all children have the same experience, which many of us take for granted.”

Alyssa Rose’ ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ presentation:

“This island is certainly a lovely place, but for the physically challenged or disabled, access to this beauty is very limited. As a result, it is difficult for the children to be taken into the community and despite being such a small place, there’s still a huge stigma attached to the topic, with many knowing very little, if anything at all, about children with special needs here.

“As a result, this makes it difficult to gain financial support due to the significant lack of awareness here on the island and I am hoping to change that.

“The Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy is the island’s only dedicated school for children with special needs. Students here are between the ages of 4 and 18, with moderate to severe multiple challenges. They are taught an adapted curriculum that includes language and literacy, functional math, living and communication skills, physical education, social, vocational and recreational skills.

“The Friends of Hope Academy is a charity associated with the Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy. Their objectives are to support the school and to assist with community projects that promote awareness, education, and overall improving the lives of children with disabilities.”

The Miss World Final is set to take place this weekend, with Miss Bermuda to take part alongside over 100 other young women from around the world.

Thank you for sharing this information with this well put together short video production. All of the students at this wonderful school deserve an opportunity to reach their full potential and to participate in society if they desire.

One of the parents in the video mentioned that they need a shade for the kids so they can play outside during the summer. Can someone post a cost of that shade covering. Maybe someone or some company might see it and wish to donate.
