Ministry: Strategic Vision For Healthcare Reform
On January 16th, the Minister of Health, Seniors and Environment Jeanne Atherden will present the Ministry’s strategic vision for healthcare reform – the Bermuda Health Strategy 2014 – 2019 and The Bermuda Health Action Plan.
“The goal of the Symposium is to provide a forum to introduce the Bermuda Health Strategy 2014-2019 and the Bermuda Health Action Plan in the context of Bermuda’s commitments to the World Health Organization [WHO],” a spokesperson said.
“It will showcase initiatives underway to improve quality, access and sustainability, focusing on WHO priorities in chronic non-communicable disease prevention, capacity building and health system strengthening.
“The Symposium will bring together key health system stakeholders to share information and generate constructive dialogue on the various perspectives across the health sector and the community.
“At the Symposium, healthcare professionals, insurers, charities, patient representatives and other key stakeholders will discuss action needed to reduce chronic non-communicable diseases, improve healthcare quality, and address insurance access and premiums. Stakeholders will discuss the strategic vision and action needed to improve Bermuda’s health system.
“The Symposium – which will be offered at no cost to attendees – has been organized as a joint venture between the Ministry of Health, Seniors and Environment and the Bermuda Health Council.
“The event will be opened by the Minister of Health, Seniors and Environment and will offer presentations by the Acting CEO of the Bermuda Health Council, Tawanna Wedderburn; the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Cheryl Peek-Ball; Acting Director Health Insurance Department, Calvin White; and the Chief of Staff Bermuda Hospitals Board, Dr Michael Weitekamp.
“Following the presentations, a panel discussion will feature representatives from the health professionals, insurers, charities and public health and will allow for a Q&A session with the attendees.
“An invitation to the Symposium was extended to all health professionals, other health system partners, charities, insurers, and the patient representatives.”
Minister of Health, Seniors and Environment Jeanne Atherden said: “I am very excited to bring over 100 key persons in our health system together to improve health in our country. A healthy population is vitally important to the economy, which needs healthy people and a healthy workforce.
“The strategic vision and action plan we’ll be discussing are important steps in getting Bermuda on the track to recovery to reduce costs and ensure healthcare is accessible. We intend to focus on action and quality, and I’m very much looking forward to the discussion.”
Acting CEO of the Bermuda Health Council, Tawanna Wedderburn said: “Bermuda does very well on some key performance indicators compared to other developed economies. We recognize there is room for improvement specifically with respect to chronic non-communicable diseases.
“The Symposium provides an opportunity for us to share what is being done to improve care and quality while assuring access to preventive services and affordable insurance coverage.
“We are excited about the strategic initiatives underway and grateful for the intensive collaboration between health entities committed to empowering people to look after their own health.”
