St. George’s Preparatory School celebrated World Book Day on March 3 and March 4, with children wearing specialized t-shirts and enjoying entertainment, while hundreds of books were exchanged during the event.

A spokesperson said, “On Thursday, March 3, on the official World Book Day, the children wore their World Book Day 2015 t-shirts designed last year by student Alexa Matthie and took part in a book exchange. Hundreds of books were exchanged and the children were delighted to swap their old books for ‘new’.

“Friday, March 4 was a hive of activity all day at the school. The morning kicked off with a visit from head librarian Mrs. Joanne Brangman who entertained the children with stories from Jon Sciezka’s Stinky Cheeseman and Other Fairy Stupid Tales.

“This was followed by a book character parade with characters such as Malachi Moniz’s Captain Underpants outfit being greeted with peals of laughter and applause.

“Earlier in the term the children were given the opportunity to design bookmarks. The winning designs by Alexandra Medeiros and Skyler O’Connor were made into real bookmarks thanks to ProServe and presented to each child in the afternoon.

“The highlight of the afternoon activities included visits from well-known Bermudian storytellers and authors. The visitors included Dr. Kim Dismont Robinson, Rosheena Beek, Melodye Micere Van Putten, Liana Hall, Tania Stafford and Carlita Lodge. The children also had opportunities to watch world renowned authors such as Michael Morpurgo telling stories using the World Book Day website.

“Parents were invited to have lunch with their children and share books. Booksellers included Jill Amos Raine, the Book Cellar and Robertson’s. The highlights of the day included a fun book making activity with artist Ami Zanders, calligraphy with Michelle Halpin, creating illustrations with Stephen Daniels and stencilling with Marlo Santiago.

“The PTA parents had also worked hard over several months to raise funds for a reading garden which was opened as part of World Book Day. A special ‘secret garden’ with shade, seating and plants off the school library.

“The children were very enthusiastic about using the new recreational space. The entire event and garden was made possible as a result of help from the close knit school and wider community.

“The organizer of the event would like to thank Charles Johnson from Somer’s Isle Carpentry [shade], Gary Hassell from Fast Services [fencing], Cathy Roberts from Bermuda Gifts and Linens [pots], all the PTA parents, Bermuda Lumber, Master’s, Gorham’s, Brighton Nurseries, the children and staff at St. George’s Prep, the authors, writers and booksellers who participated, Bermuda Forwarders, and artists Khalid Muhammad and Charann Woolridge for their awesome mural.”
