Acting Opposition Leader’s Cup Match Message
[Acting Opposition Leader David Burt's Cup Match message]
The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party joins with Bermudians of all walks of life in celebrating Cup Match 2016. Whether camping with family, gathering at the field with friends or enjoying being on the water, it is a chance for each of us to pause, reflect and get reinvigorated for the remainder of the year.
As we look back at the founding of Cup Match over a century ago, we remember the men and women of courage and conviction who stood resolute in the belief that Emancipation should not only be observed, but it should be celebrated for generations to come.
We honour their memory and their sacrifice and pray that we will emerge from this holiday weekend renewed in our commitment to working together, building together and striving together for a better Bermuda that works for all.
As we celebrate, let us not forget that there is much work to be done to end mass Bermudian unemployment and to reverse the trend of many of Bermudians leaving our shores to seek opportunity abroad since they cannot afford to live in the country of their birth.
As we celebrate let us not forget the families and friends of the young men who could not be with this Cup Match; lost to our island’s senseless gun violence.
Cup Match truly is Bermuda at its best. A time when Bermudians are at our warmest, our friendliest and our most hospitable. We extend this not just to each other but also to our visitors.
Let us join together to make this the safest, happiest and most fun Cup Match there has ever been and together let us keep the spirit of this two day holiday within our hearts as we go forward.

Bermuda Triangle…………………
Thank you, Mr. Burt.
Why would anyone dislike this comment?
Walter Roban, needs to think before he condems what happened at the last cup match fiasco……this man has a lot to answer to also …
Was that comment necessary
Maybe Mr Burt also needs to read the column by Chris Famous. It is very sad and disturbing in view of what the two days of Cup Match represent. Bermuda clearly still has a very long way to go, and it’s not just a black/white issue. Chris highlighted a very ugly side of Bermuda, one that tends to be ignored.
Could he not leave politics alone for just one occasion? The one weekend a year when we put differences aside & whoop it up for a few days & Burt has to inject politics.
Where is Bean? The least he could do is come out & say something pleasant about Cup Match.
As we celebrate, let us not forget that there is much work to be done to end mass Bermudian unemployment and to reverse the trend of many of Bermudians leaving our shores to seek opportunity abroad since they cannot afford to live in the country of their birth.
We can’t forget, don’t worry. That is the reason your party is no longer the government.
Let’s finish this remark to provide the proper context which Mr. Burt conveniently ignored:
“they cannot afford to live in the country of their birth” due in large part to the PLP’s ineptocracy and abysmal track record of ill considered and short sighted socioeconomic policies that have burdened Bermudian taxpayers under the yoke of foreign lenders for decades to come.
Very nice message. But, I’m always left wondering what your agenda is?
Cupmatch to me means, cricket, boating, camping and enjoying Bermuda and NOTHING else!!! Believe that !!!
