Olympics: Tyrone Smith To Carry Bermuda Flag

The Bermuda Olympic Association announced that Tyrone Smith will be the flag bearer for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies this evening, saying that the three-time Olympian has “earned the right to carry the flag and proudly lead our team.”

Smith is part of an 8-strong Bermuda team which also includes triathlete Flora Duffy, sailor Cameron Pimentel, sailor Ceci Wollman, rower Michelle Pearson, sprinter Tre Houston as well as swimmers Julian Fletcher and Rebecca Heyliger.

Carlos Lee, Chef de Mission of Team Bermuda, said: “On behalf of the Bermuda Olympic Association, I am pleased to announce that Tyrone Smith [Athletics - Men's Long Jump] has been appointed our flag bearer for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies.”

“At 32 years old [the elder statesman of our team] this is the third successive Olympic Games that he has qualified for and I believe he’s earned the right to carry the flag and proudly lead our team into the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.”

  4. I must be honest. I really wanted for Tyrone Smith to carry the Olympic Flag for his country, Bermuda. What an accomplishment to carry one’s own country flag…. what an honour.

      To Have some backbone – Why.I have hardly heard the name of Tyrone compared to Flora who is involved with so many international games.
      Flora has brought more medals to Bermuda and is more deserving to carry the flag.
