Video: NASA Films Hurricane Over Bermuda

October 14, 2016

Cameras outside the International Space Station captured Hurricane Nicole as it passed over Bermuda yesterday, offering a one-of-a-kind view of the storm from far above.

In describing the footage they recorded, NASA said, “From and altitude of 252 miles, cameras outside the International Space Station captured new views of Hurricane Nicole Oct. 13 at 1:40 p.m. EDT as it passed directly over Bermuda, packing winds of 120 miles per hour. Nicole moved past Bermuda by mid-afternoon, but not before creating eight-foot storm surges and resulting flooding the island.”

As Nicole passed over us on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center described Nicole as a “large hurricane,” saying “hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles [110 km] from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles [295 km]. ”
