PLP: Allan Warner’s Work Will Not Be Forgotten
The PLP “joins the community in mourning the loss of a local legend, Mr. Allan Warner,” Shadow Minister of Health and Community Affairs Michael Weeks said, adding that he “inspired many through his dancing, drumming and overall commitment to the community.”
Mr Warner had a long history with the Gombeys, having started dancing with them in 1959 at the age of three. He crafted his first Gombey costume at age 9, began drumming for Warner Gombeys at age 16, and his passion for Gombey culture led to him becoming Captain of Warner’s Gombeys.
Gombey troupes came together this weekend to pay tribute to Mr Warner
Mr Weeks said, “The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party joins the community in mourning the loss of a local legend, Mr. Allan Warner.
“Leader of the Warner Gombeys, Mr. Warner believed in keeping the Gombey tradition alive in Bermuda, and inspired many through his dancing, drumming and overall commitment to the community.
“For most of his life Mr. Warner not only entertained locals and tourists, but he also travelled sharing our Gombey dance tradition with the world. Mr. Warner helped to cultivate a passion for Gombey dancing in those who learned the art under him, and his work within the community will not be forgotten.
“To his wife Tracey, daughter Algina, family and friends, we extend our most sincere condolences. Our hope is that the memories you hold and cherish will be a source of strength during this difficult time.”
