DeSilva & Pedro Awarded Police Medals
Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva has been awarded the Queen’s Police Medal and Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro has received the Overseas Territories Police Medal, Government House confirmed this evening.
“Government House has announced that Her Majesty The Queen has approved the award of: The Queen’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service [QPM] to Bermuda’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Michael DeSilva and the award of the Overseas Territories Police Medal [OTM] to Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro,” a Government House spokesperson said.
“Mr DeSilva has led the Bermuda Police Service with authority, sensitivity and skill since 2009. Under his leadership there has been a steady reduction in gang and gun violence, reflecting efficient and intelligent policing in service to the community.
“Mr Pedro joined the Bermuda Police Service in 1993 and has worked in a variety of postings. He is an accomplished detective and has made a significant contribution to policing in particular through his leadership of the Serious Crime Unit and by leading organisational change in demanding circumstances.
“The Governor, Mr John Rankin, congratulated both Officers for their distinguished service and these well-deserved awards.”

Biggest lie of 2017 so far followed by Tweedy, BIU, PLP Church Stumpers & Pepper spray blockers. All must go with Tweedy stand strong team oba.
Well deserved after overcoming so many obsticles literal and verbal.
Shalom.
Can someone tell me what real progress has been made since 2009 ? Prove the stats support the recommendation. Bermuda is not safer. Let’s be real. Step down commissioner. Let someone else lead the disfunctional BPS.
@ Really. Really??
I Agree. He is not even an experienced police officer. The top cop should be a post for an experienced well rounded police officer and not someone that has been pushed and hidden for that post. That’s why I believe the Governors position should be made redundant as we need someone who will ask tough questions instead of rubber stamping top positions such as this.
Is this some kind of sick joke?
Congratulations.
Now get ready to support the duly elected govt if the “mob” breaks the law.
I would like to know how officers are chosen for this distinguished medal? Surely the Queen doesn’t known these officers or have followed their career. Unfortunately in Bermuda being promoted to the rank of a Chief Constable doesn’t mean it’s well deserved. I know that the Commissioner is not an experienced police officer. I would love to be in his circles when outside of Bermuda when he tries to tell stories of him doing actual police work. I seriously doubt he’s even arrrested one person, testified at court or defused a tense situation. Why can’t a hardworking officer be nominated for this medal? Why is it always the ones that are less deserving?
What does it take to be recognised as an “experienced officer”? Mr. DeSilva has worked in Narcotics, CID, Motorcycle Section, Marine Section, Officer in Charge of Operational Policing, OIC Training, and a few other posts in his 30 plus years of policing. I’d call that a great deal of experience.
You don’t need stats to see that there has been a decline in gang violence since 2009. Gang shootings and murders have gone down way down.
Mr. Pedro has also done well in his career as a police officer.
There isn’t a man or woman on earth that can stop violence all together, so lets get over this nonsense about police needing to do more about gangs in Bermuda. More importantly what are we as citizens of this country doing to help curb the gang issues?.
Both men are well deserving of being recognised by HM!
Haha. BDA Onion, you must be a comedian, Mr. Desilva or one of his henchmen. Merely existing in a unit doesn’t mean you are experienced. Being a head of a department doesn’t make you an experienced officer either. Most of the promotions in that force are not merit based or experienced based.
