Video: Athletes Donate $29K For Hurricane Relief
This afternoon [Nov 9], Bermuda’s ‘Athletes in Action’ presented over $29,000 they raised for hurricane relief, after a number of island teams worked to help raise funds for victims of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
A Salvation Army spokesperson said, “This represents the idea and inspiration of one person, and over 50 other athletes caught the vision.
“This vision is going to bring some tangible relief to those victims of Hurricanes Irma and Maria that devastated the Caribbean in late September. Steve was hoping to raise about $10,000 as he did for the Katrina disaster in 2005.
“The athletes who participated represented 10 teams ranging from 10-years-old to Steve. From cycle clubs, gyms, aerobics, zumba, gym workouts, yoga classes, running clubs, walkers, and swimmers.”
“All of this activity happened during the week of October 9-14 and the results are in.”
“Steve Burgess presented prizes to the team that brought in their money first – Body Massages from Ashlan Clinic, winners Gary Raynor’s Team #1, “Strength & Unity” [cycle club].
“The team that raised the largest amount – 1 month free classes at Lucky Elephant Yoga, winners Weekenders #1 [$9,100] [yoga team].
“Major Frank Pittman gave an overview of the Salvation Army’s immediate work after the hurricanes since we had churches on 95% of the damaged islands.
“He went on to give the total collected by the athletes as $22,877 deposited, with another $7,000 committed, bringing the total to $29,877.”
The 9-minute live video replay is below:
“A few more commitments are still to come, so the total committed will be over $30,000. The athletes have all completed a major task in assisting others in the Caribbean and at a personal expense of working out physically. They have answered the call of their fellow man.”
Calvin Ming, Director of PR for the Salvation Army, presented Steve Burgess with the ‘Friends of the Army Award for his work in making this hurricane relief effort come to fruition.
