Two Males Attack Student During Field Trip
[Updated] Police responded to a robbery at Somers Garden in St. George’s this afternoon, where a group of CedarBridge students and their teachers were on a field trip, when a 17-year-old male student was attacked by two males and a teacher who tried to intervene received an injury to her finger.
A police spokesperson said, “Around 1:10pm today [February 6th] police officers responded to a reported aggravated robbery at Somers Garden in St. George’s.
“Initial information indicates that a group of CedarBridge Academy students along with their teachers were on a field trip visiting St. George’s.
“As the students and teachers entered Somers Garden a 17-year-old male student was attacked by two males – described as approximately 5 feet tall, 18 to 20 years old wearing a black tracksuit and approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall wearing a green or grey tracksuit respectively.
“As a result, the 17-year-old male student received scratches to his neck.
“One of the teachers, said to be a 30-year-old woman, tried to intervene and sustained an injury to one of her fingers. She also dropped her black iPhone 8 during the incident, which was picked up by the assailants before they made good their escape.
“The teacher was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital by private vehicle for treatment.
“Any witnesses to this incident are urged to call the Criminal Investigation Department on 247-1744 or the independent and anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477.”
Update 4.44pm: Minister of Education Diallo Rabain said, “The antisocial activities that took place against a CBA teacher and student today will not be tolerated and will not go unaddressed. Whether students are in the classroom or off-campus, it is their right to feel safe and secure at all times. The safety of our students and teachers is a top priority for the Ministry of Education and the Department of Education.”
“An immediate plan of action is that members of the school’s security team will accompany students tomorrow and Friday on the remaining tours of Somers Gardens. However, this incident has caused the Department to explore safety procedures to implement while teachers and students are on field trips.
“The Bermuda Police Service has our full cooperation while carrying out necessary investigations and we appeal any witnesses to contact the police. My deepest regrets and heartfelt thoughts go out to the families of the teacher and student who were involved in this incident today.”
Update 6.30pm: The police have now amended their report saying, “Preliminary inquiries do not substantiate that a gold chain was taken from the 17-year-old male CedarBridge Academy student at Somers Garden, as initial information had suggested.
“However, detectives continue to look into the assault of the student by two males and the theft of the teacher’s cellular phone. Any witnesses to this incident are still urged to call the Criminal Investigation Department on 247-1744 or the independent and anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477.”

Brazen and with no sensitivity to school students. Once again, no police officers on foot, which might have reduced the police possibility, by getting to know who is who in the town.
Police aren’t that smart.

The actual crime took place in less than 2 minutes, ,I can’t say if the culprits were the town ,5 mins or 3 hours. It is shocking, it has to be ever so frightenin g to these school students. Most folks re slide the police cannot be everywhere, but do put at least one officer on foot patrol between Water Street and Somers there are also two banks . Road vehicle checks maybe be an inconvenience, but they usually yield some results.

HHmmm… horrid nastiness does plague the private schools too. The is NO UTOPIA in this island. With the private schools, HUSH is the word!!
