April 22, 2019

SCARS in partnership with Centre Against Abuse are collaborating to bring awareness to the heinous crime of sexual assault through their Partner In Prevention Event on Friday [April 26] starting at 5.45pm at BUEI.

A spokesperson said, “April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Saving our Children and Revealing Secrets [SCARS] in partnership with Centre Against Abuse [CAA] are collaborating to bring awareness to the heinous crime of sexual assault through their Partner In Prevention Event.

“This event will honour various government departments for their ongoing work in preventing sexual assault and supporting survivors of sexual assault. This event will also feature dynamic guest speaker, Kevin McNeil, a Special Victims Detective and child sexual assault survivor from the USA.

SCARS & CAA Partner In Prevention Bermuda April 2019

“Mr. McNeil left his job, very similar to Law and Order Special Victims unit, to dedicate his life to the awareness of protecting children full time. Kevin educates the world on the effects of sexual assault on individuals, families, and communities. His passion is to help others heal from the effects of sexual assault. Kevin is a renowned speaker who shares lessons from his own life experiences that transform, motivate, and inspire!

“Debi Ray Rivers of SCARS stated that she is excited that Mr. McNeil is coming to Bermuda to share his testimony and provide his knowledge as a former detective. His wealth of knowledge as former detective and working with the police and the judicial system coupled with the fact that he is a survivor of a child sexual assault makes him the ideal person to assist us in our work to end sexual assault in Bermuda.

“Laurie Shiell of CAA is looking forward to once again partnering with SCARS and bringing awareness to the community on how they can assist a survivor of sexual assault, as well as providing tools on how to decrease sexual assaults in Bermuda, which is the most under reported crime. It is our hope that from this event, survivors will understand that the sexual assault was not their fault, and that the shame is not theirs to carry, and that the community will learn how to support survivors, and also be encouraged to hold perpetrators of this crime accountable.

“Partner in Prevention will be held on Friday April 26, 2019 at BUEI and tickets can be purchased for $20.00 at ptix.bm. Tickets will not be sold at the door. The event will be starting at 5:45 with refreshments in the BUEI main lobby. You do not want to miss this life changing event!”
