Dominique Willis Named Acting Artistic Director
The Bermuda Civic Ballet Board of Trustees said they are pleased to introduce Dominique Willis as the new Acting Artistic Director for the Summer Intensive 2019 following the resignation of Coral Waddell after more than 40 years as Director.
A spokesperson said, “The 2019 summer season welcomes an exciting change for the Bermuda Civic Ballet, a dance education charity that has been offering summer dance programmes and performances since its inception in 1972.
“After more than forty years as Artistic Director, Coral Waddell stepped down last year. The Board of Trustees and alumni of BCB extend a heartfelt thank-you for the decades of hard work and countless hours Mrs Waddell dedicated to growing the Bermuda Civic Ballet into the institution it is today.
“With the resignation of Mrs Waddell, the Board of Trustees is pleased to introduce Dominique Willis as the new Acting Artistic Director of Bermuda Civic Ballet.
“A Bermudian dancer and alumna of Civic, Dean College and University of North Carolina, Dominique has been teaching dance in private dance studios for over 10 years – six of which in grades K-12 with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District.
“Dominique is a former soloist with Movement Migration Dance Company, as well has performed with Bodiography Contemporary Ballet Charlotte as a soloist, Gaspard and Dancers as soloist and rehearsal director, and with Caroline Calouche and Co. She joins Bermuda Civic Ballet this year as Interim Director with a wealth of knowledge, connections, a passion for dance and love of humanity.
“Her vast experience and international connections will bode well for the next chapter of Civic, which strives to foster the future of dance education in Bermuda by providing an international caliber summer intensive to local dancers without them having to leave home.
“Bermuda Civic Ballet is an invaluable resource to those students who may otherwise be unable to pursue summer intensive programmes overseas, as well to allow serious dancers the opportunity to continue their training throughout the summer with supplemental dancing.
“Changes to the 2019 Summer Intensive include a shift from Pembroke Sunday School to Cedarbridge Academy, where dancers will enjoy state of the art facilities including air conditioning to allow for days to run consecutively from midday to evening classes and rehearsals until 8pm. The two-week intensive programme will commence on July 15 through July 26, culminating with a Workshop Demonstration.
“This year’s guest teachers and choreographers include Precious Adams, a First Artist with the English National Ballet; Pablo Ruvalcaba Tovar, a former member of Jose Limon Dance Company; Maria Caruso, Artistic Director Bodiography Contemporary Ballet and Dance Chair of LaRoche University; and Bermuda’s own Rikkai Scott, Artisitic Director, BDBlaq Dance.
“Classes with the Intensive are also now more diversified, now offering Ballet technique and repertoire, Limón based modern, ballet, urban contemporary, jazz and African in addition to yoga.
“Tuition for the 2019 Bermuda Civic Ballet Summer Intensive is $550 for full day participation. An evening only option is available for $135; both of which include the two-weeks of classes. Enrollment is open to dancers ten years of age and older, as well as working professionals.”
