Video: Gold Cup Team Member Osagi Bascome

June 19, 2019

Representing Bermuda in the Gold Cup is an “amazing feeling” according to footballer Osagi Bascome, who said it is an honour to represent the island at such a big occasion.

When asked what it means for him to represent Bermuda at the Gold Cup, Mr. Bascome told Bernews, “It’s an amazing feeling.  It is such an honour to be representing such a small country in this big occasion, the Gold Cup. It’s first time playing in this competition, and it’s just amazing feeling to be part of this team.”

We spoke to Mr Bascome just before the first game where he played a key role in Bermuda scoring our first ever Gold Cup goal by providing the assist to Dante Leverock, with his finely tuned kick putting the ball in the perfect position for Mr Leverock to head it home.

His assist earned praise from Bermudian football legend Shaun Goater, and in addition to the praise for his actual football skills, he also got some plaudits for his style, with the official Gold Cup social media account including him in a compilation of ‘best hairstyles’ at the Gold Cup.

The footballer, like some of the other team members, comes from a family well known for their sporting excellence, and in describing how he started playing football said, “I grew up playing football, playing cricket.

“I have four brothers, so I was always doing something that had to do with sports. My father was a footballer, he also played cricket, so I couldn’t get away from it. So, that’s why I grew up in sports.”

In addition to Mr Bascome, Bermuda’s team also includes Nahki Wells, Dante Leverock, Jonte Smith, Reggie Lambe, Dale Eve, Oliver Jalen Harvey, Calon Minors, Roger Lee, Kacy Milan Butterfield, Jaylon Bather, Lejaun Simmons, Donte Brangman, Chikosi Basden, Zeiko Lewis, Willie Clemons, Jahquil Hill, Cecoy Robinson, Justin Donawa, Wendell Tre Ming, Liam Evans, Marco Warren, and Quinaceo Hunt.

The Gombey Warriors have already played Haiti and will now take on Costa Rica on June 20th in Dallas, and then match up against Nicaragua on June 24th in New Jersey, and in an effort to provide comprehensive coverage of Bermuda’s debut in this highly prestigious regional competition, Bernews has a dedicated reporter traveling with the team in order to bring all the latest action and insights, with the special coverage thanks to the support of Butterfield & Vallis, One Communications, and Bermuda Security Group.
