Paul Mariner Visits Somersfield Academy
Somersfield Academy recently hosted a visit by former First Division player for Ipswich Town, Arsenal, and Portsmouth, Paul Mariner.
A spokesperson said, “English National, Paul Mariner, and former First Division player for Ipswich Town, Arsenal, and Portsmouth is pictured with the Somersfield Academy Over 13 football team, prior to their game against Whitney Institute. While at Ipswich, the team won both the FA and UEFA Cups.
“The Center Forward started in the 1982 World Cup finals for England and represented his country in 35 games, scoring 13 times.
“The former coach of Harvard University and MLS teams, New England Revolution and FC Toronto, is currently a popular soccer pundit on ESPN FC and is visiting friends on the island.
“The school team were able to have a one on one with Mr. Mariner to discuss some of the characteristics that make up a good footballer. They touched on humility, dedication, perseverance and the personality of the individual. He spoke about how if things aren’t going right for players, the key is to go back to the basics of what they learned.
“After his talk with the students, he headed out to the field to help cheer the Over 13 Boys team on as they played Whitney Institute. Somersfield were victorious with a 1-0 final score.”
