City: Misuse Of Restrooms Presents Challenge

“The City is reviewing options for repairs and reopening, but ongoing misuse of public restrooms presents a major challenge,” the City said as they provided an update on the closure of the Union Street public bathrooms “due to extensive vandalism and safety concerns.”

The spokesperson said, “The City of Hamilton is providing an update on the closure of the Union Street public bathrooms, located opposite the Liberty Theatre, which have been closed since February 26, 2025, due to extensive vandalism and safety concerns.

“These facilities include one male and one female bathroom. Leading up to their closure, City crews observed severe misuse, including drug paraphernalia, broken urinals, leaking faucets, and repeatedly damaged toilets—many of which had just been repaired weeks earlier.

“Despite efforts by a professional cleaning company, which worked diligently to maintain cleanliness under difficult conditions, the City made the decision to close the bathrooms when the situation became untenable and significant safety concerns were raised.

“In the interim, the closest public restrooms are available at:

  1. Victoria Street Bathrooms [Bus Depot]
  2. #7 Front Street

“The City is reviewing options for repairs and reopening, but ongoing misuse of public restrooms presents a major challenge. Vandalism not only results in costly repairs but also impacts the ability to keep these essential facilities open for responsible users.

“Unfortunately, the Victoria Street bathrooms have also sustained significant damage due to misuse, including broken doors, locks, vanities, fixtures, lights, and mirrors, as well as the repeated theft of paper towels and toilet paper. The City urges all residents and visitors to treat these public facilities with respect and to report any acts of vandalism.

“If anyone witnesses vandalism or misuse, they are encouraged to contact the Bermuda Police Service.”

“We understand the importance of public restrooms, but they require proper care and cooperation from the community,” said a City spokesperson. “We are asking the public to help us maintain these spaces so they remain accessible for everyone who needs them.”

The spokesperson said, “The City appreciates the public’s support and will provide updates on the status of repairs and reopening decisions.”

What’s new? This is another example of why we can’t have nice things. What is the purpose of doing damage to a public restroom, of all things? How stupid do you have to be to wreck something that you need to use?
