Recalling John Witherspoon’s Bermuda Concert
Local fans of beloved actor and comedian John Witherspoon were this week mourning his death and recalling the veteran funny man’s concert appearance in Bermuda in 2011.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Witherspoon began his career in stand-up comedy in the 1970s.
He was probably best known for playing Ice Cube’s father in the hit 1995 movie comedy Friday and its sequels Next Friday and Friday After Next.

Mr. Witherspoon also appeared as the unconventional father, Pops, in the 1995-1999 Wayans Brothers situation comedy and was a regular on NBC’s The Tracy Morgan Show.
He had co-starred alongside Eddie Murphy twice in the movies Boomerang and Vampire in Brooklyn.
The entertainer, who died at his California home on Tuesday at the age of 77, performed to a sold-out house at the Fairmont Southampton over the Christmas holidays in 2011.
