Bermuda Research Journal Aim For Expansion
Ywione Darrell and Kyaida Lanthier are looking to expand the reach of the Bermuda Journal of Academic Research after releasing its first edition.
The co-chief editors said the focus is now on growing submissions, attracting new readers and securing support for future editions, with annual publications planned and a call for papers already issued.
Mr Darrell, 23, said the idea stemmed from a desire to make research more accessible in Bermuda.
“Kyaida and I knew each other from our high school days, and we started talking about how cool it would be to have a little research channel,” Mr Darrell told Bernews.
“We come from different fields of interest, but we’re both so passionate about our fields of study.
“We liked the idea of bringing that research together on the island and allowing people in Bermuda to have a platform and for those overseas to share and have work published.
“We really saw the value in putting academic research in front of Bermudians.”
A former Saltus Grammar School student, Mr Darrell said the journal was designed to break down barriers between disciplines and make research more widely understood.
“We designed the journal, the logo, and put together our editorial board, our committee, going about making sure we have a clean process for collecting articles and vetting them,” said Mr Darrell, who studied at King’s College London and the University of Oxford.
“What’s unique about this is how broad reaching and multi-disciplinary it is – we’re trying to break down barriers across different sectors and areas of study.
“We’re fully focused on the power of multi-disciplinary research.
“Frankco Harris [criminology], Dr Carika Weldon [genomic research] and Dr Daniel Cavanagh [mental health research] presented at our Procuremeny Event in August last year. Dr Weldon was on our editorial board for the first edition.
“Once you break down barriers between different fields of study and academics and non-academics, you get good research and good policy results.”
Ms Lanthier, 22, said the format was designed to appeal to a wider audience beyond traditional academic readers.
“We’re hoping this format can attract those people who don’t read academic research super often and academics because there’s a mixture of really high-level research and high school students who are just starting out,” said Ms Lanthier, a former Warwick Academy student who studied at Western University and Columbia University.
The journal, founded in 2024, brings together research across fields including economics, law and public policy, and gender studies.
The founders are now seeking sponsors to support the project’s growth, including funding for future editions, platform development and potential conferences.
