Police Warn Public About Phishing Scam

April 21, 2020

The Bermuda Police Service is once again reminding the public about emails that “threaten to reveal details about the recipient’s online activity unless they purchase two thousand dollars-worth of bitcoin.”

A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service is aware of threatening emails now circulating locally.

“The sender uses different email addresses but they are all from “outlook accounts”. They claim to know the recipient’s passwords and social media information and threatens to reveal details about the recipient’s online activity unless they purchase two thousand dollars-worth of bitcoin and forward it to the person who sent the email.

“The recipient is warned to do so within 24 hours of getting the email.

“This is yet another phishing email.

“Please note the following recommended suggestions:

  • “Delete the email. Do not respond or click on any of the attachments or links, if any.
  • “Do not provide any sensitive information
  • “Install antivirus software or other security protection if you currently do not have it installed on your computer
  • “Change your computer, email and other social media passwords using a strong password combination consisting of capital and lower case letter, numbers and symbols.”
