Court: Men Charged In Connection With Collision
Two men were charged in Magistrates Court today [July 2] in connection with the incident at a road checkpoint that resulted in two Royal Bermuda Regiment soldiers being injured.
The police said, “Two men, Giovanni Saltus and Makhail Saltus, were this morning charged in Magistrate’s Court, in connection with Monday night’s serious road traffic collision which left one soldier critically injured and requiring overseas medical treatment and his colleague with a broken leg.
“The incident occurred when the suspects reportedly drove through a Royal Bermuda Regiment checkpoint on the South Shore Road in Devonshire, at around 11:15 on Monday night.
“Mikhail Saltus was charged with two counts of causing grievous bodily harm by driving in a dangerous manner, driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, refusing to submit a breath sample and breach of curfew. He was not called upon to plead as the charges were laid indictable.
“He was granted $10,000 bail on the condition that he visit the Hamilton Police Station three times a week and adhere to a 10pm to 6am curfew.
“Giovanni Saltus was charged with breach of curfew.
“He was granted $3,000 bail on the condition that he visit the Hamilton Police Station once a week and adhere to a 10pm to 6am curfew.
“Both men were jointly charged with conspiracy to defeat the course of justice by attempting to leave the scene of an accident in which they were involved.
“They will next appear during the Supreme Court arraignment sessions in September.”
