PLP & OBA On New Parties & Independents

September 8, 2020

“It speaks to the health of our democracy that new parties and independents are looking to run and represent the people,” the PLP said, while the OBA said “given who is leading the new Party, there is clearly a sentiment that an alternative to the PLP is needed.”

These statements were made after Bernews asked both parties for comment on the newly launched Free Democratic Movement political party, which is being led by Marc Bean, who previously served as a PLP Senator, MP and Opposition Leader, before resigning from politics in 2016.

According to the FDM website, their other founding members include Kyle Bridgewater, Gavin Smith, Desmond Crockwell, Kae Thomas-Palacio and Eugene Dean.

In addition to the new FDM party, at least one Independent will stand in the 2020 General Election, with Pastor Maria Seaman announcing that she will run as an Independent candidate in Constituency #27 Warwick North Central.

All the candidates for the election — which will be held on October 1st — will be confirmed on Nomination Day this Thursday [Sept 10].

PLP statement:

A PLP spokesperson said, “It speaks to the health of our democracy that new parties and independents are looking to run and represent the people. We welcome them and look forward to hearing more about their vision for the country.”

OBA statement:

An OBA spokesperson said: “It is good to see more people step up like this. Given who is leading the new Party, there is clearly a sentiment that an alternative to the PLP is needed.”

How about a alternative to the obaUBPPeeeee is needed. Stop fronting surrogates to sway voters. That trick is so old. Your only hope is for black Bermudians to divide their votes by voting for FDM. People already see your playbook the PLP will win.

    • Youngdoe says:

I hope to hell they don’t. The premier thinks we are all dumbasses. Apparently, our memory banks only hold 1GB of data. We can’t remember anything prior to the beginning of covid19. Thank God I upgraded my hard drive with an additional 1TB. I want to hear the details of the new party’s platform.

  2. This is the time for the P.L.P to tighten up on their electoral promises that are yet to be fulfilled and don’t just pushed the agenda of how they think they got us through Covid19, The O.B.A needs to go back to the drawing board for another 4 years and recognize they screwed Bermuda over big time with the airport deal that should have never happen, along with other situations, such as how does Mr. Cannonier get to be the leader of grace after being the leader of disaster.

As far as the new party is concerned, they will upset numbers a bit at the poll but it wont make to big of an impact, and Dr. Maria Seaman as an independent, point’s out the fact that she can not endorse the stance the P.L.P is taking on Weed, Please some one tell her, its Marijuana not Weed, and no matter what her stance on it, Marijuana will become legal World wide over as it’s all about the Almighty Dollar for the Governments Globally, and I for one will invest in the Marijuana market from the medical point of view, because it is not a drug that alters the brain, if it is used in it’s correct form.

I think the agenda of the new party and of the independent needs to grasp at greater issues then the ones they are presented so far. The O.B.A are clueless because they still have a platform that speaks for the elite in our society, and the working class majority is not high on their agenda, but will use the tactics of sounding good about helping the working class majority, to get back into the house, but I think their bigger agenda is to continue on the path they were on, were only a certain part of our society would do well.

Out with the Middle Class is the agenda of the O.B.A, They want to have the Have’s and The Have Not’s, no middle class. my entire household will be voting for Mr. Jason Hayward, so none of the other joker’s need to show up at my door.

Gosh, where to start with this little lot.

      - The airport deal. Really? Do some maths, see if you can articulate why “we’ve been screwed” and then we can have an honest debate. Let’s talk about what the OBA inherited when they were elected.

      - “…it is not a drug that alters the brain…” this is factually and demonstrably untrue.

It is absolutely true that the middle class drives the economy. Every economy. But, we’ve had 20 years of PLP economic genius that’s practically eradicated Bermuda’s middle class and systematically widened the gap between the haves and have nots. This isn’t on the OBA, it’s firmly on the PLP and to date we’re seeing no ideas, nothing. They absolutely haven’t got a clue. Look at the inflation figures from a couple of weeks ago. Do you know what that means? It means hte economy is stagnating. There’s no demand for goods and services, and yet the cost of Government continues to rise. Who is paying for that?

      You need an economics lesson.

It’s settled science that marijuana can, and does, lead to psychosis. It’s really beyond dispute.
All the government is doing is just ignoring the long-term health and social effects.

    • Wow says:

Spoken like a BOSS Santucci. They hate it when you keep it real. With the caliber of candidates that jetgate keeps rolling out he deserves a grade F. This is actually very sad that it’s come down to this. All I see is a very weak opposition.

Let’s be honest these individuals are know where close to the quality the OBA had before. If Bermuda had only 2 choices to vote for…OBA of the past or this new OBA 2.0. The whole of Bermuda would be voting for Michael Dunkely, blacks and whites just like the UBP days.

    • saud says:

Why do you support discrimination and homophobia by the elected government?

  3. Joe Bloggs says:

“An OBA spokesperson said: “It is good to see more people step up like this. Given who is leading the new Party, there is clearly a sentiment that an alternative to the PLP is needed.””

An anonymous OBA spokesperson said an alternative to plp is needed? Shocking!

  4. What? says:

“An OBA spokesperson said: “… there is clearly a sentiment that an alternative to the PLP is needed.””

Isn’t the OBA supposed to be “an alternative to the PLP”?

    • sandgrownan says:

One would think so, but they’ve been politically inept and ineffective as opposition. They’ve allowed the PLP to define the debate and argument, whether it be “jetgate” or “the airport deal” or “OBA-UBP”, just a bunch of old “white racists”. They’ve taken all of this lying down and without any direction.

They should be hammering the PLP on the economy, Burt & Co’s failure to do anything substantive and come out swinging and meet each and every accusation head-on with a direct rebuttal. It’s pretty pathetic to be honest given that the only green shoots of recovery we’ve seen was on their watch. They should be shouting about that.

      • Wow says:

Spoken like another BOSS sandgrowan. It’s actually not pathetic it’s very sad and scary. Jetgate has made the new oba in his own comedy club image.

A forth party needs to be created made up with the best of Bermuda black, white, Portuguese, Spanish, Jamaican and other. Now that’s a strong opposition and later new government.

      • newperspective says:

I agree!! But this strategy doesn’t seem to work. For the last 22 years, their track record has been very poor when it comes to deficits and debt reduction.

Obviously, you haven’t got the message yet!!
