Conyers Black History Month Essay Competition
In honour of Black History Month, Conyers is launching an essay competition, inviting middle and senior school students to submit an essay on the contribution a black heroine or hero has made to the Bermuda legal system, with a $1,000 prize for the winner.
Announcing the competition, Conyers Director Neil Henderson said: “Conyers is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion both within our own firm and in the legal profession more broadly.
“We aim to ensure that young people from all backgrounds are encouraged and supported to succeed in a legal career in Bermuda. We hope that this essay competition may inspire some young Bermudians to learn from the heroines and heroes of the past and believe in their own ability to shape Bermuda’s legal system for the better in years to come.”
A spokesperson said, “In honour of Black History Month, Conyers is launching an essay competition. The firm invites all local middle and senior school students, grades 8-11, to submit an essay of 1,500 words discussing the contribution a black heroine or hero has made to the Bermuda legal system.”
“The deadline for entries is 5:00pm, Friday 19 February, 2021. The winner will be awarded a prize of $1,000. The second place winner and an honourable mention will each receive $500. Full competition details can be found here.
“The rules are as follows:
- “One author per essay; one essay per student.
- “An essay submission must be the author’s original, unpublished work.
- “All work must be typed and double spaced. Essays should include citation of any references.
- “Essays must be submitted in Word format via email to career@conyers.com no later than 19 February, 2020 by 5:00 p.m. [AST].
- “Students must include first and last name, grade, school of attendance, telephone number and/or email address.
- “Essay must be a maximum of 1500 words.
- “Eligible contestants must be a legal resident of Bermuda, and be a middle or senior school student [grades 8 - 11] during the 2020-2021 school year.
- “A panel of judges will review the essays and select winners.
- “All decisions regarding winners will be at the sole discretion of the judges and will be final and binding in all respects.
- “Conyers reserves the right to publish, reproduce or otherwise use, at their discretion, any essay submitted in whole or in part for media or promotional purposes, in any manner determined by Conyers.”
